Ok, so I have a woman at my church who told a few sisters privately that God promised her a certain man she will marry. She said God showed her this man in a dream. Well, this man has been attending our church for a year now, knows who she is but has not bothered to approach her. In fact he has shown interest in another person.
I'm happy for her but really I'm not sure if this is biblical or not. What are some bible verses on promises? I wasn't under the impression God would promise anyone the affections of another person.
Remember-Leah wanted very badly for Jacob to love her as much a Rachel. However, God did not make Jacob love Leah instead he compensated for her neglect by giving her many sons.
Sometimes I feel that people in the church will say "God Promised", "God Showed me", "God told me" when its really their own desires they they WANT to be a word from God.
Do I believe God can speak to someone about their future? Of course. Do I believe every time someone says God spoke to them that they heard correctly? No.
However, if someone told me "God said ______." I would wait and let them find out on their own whether or not it was of God. It isn't my place to plant seeds of doubt.
Specifically regarding your post, I don't think it's about God "promising the affections of another" in the sense of thwarting the free will of a third party. It's more about God revealing someone's future to them. Of course He knows whether or not that *third* someone eventually will have affection for a person, so if He wanted to reveal that then of course He could.

Perfect answer to the question. Ditto me on this.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.
"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.
"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
Quote from Ethel Goss (widow of 1st UPC Gen Supt. Howard Goss) book "The Winds of God"
I believe that God speaks to us about many things, but He will not override the will of a person.
All of those things you mentioned Timmy could be God speaking to someone. Yet in all of that He will not make them do anything.
The Word does say that the footsteps of the righteous man are ordered of the Lord. Yet when we deal with marriage or the will of others God does not make anyone do anything.

Is a parking place location more likely to be a true message from God than who will be one's wife?

What if a person went to a mall, then they felt that God wanted them to move their car to another parking space? Later there was an accident or something happened that affected that particular space. Could that have been God, Timmy?
