my great great grandfather changed his last name from Chavalier to Hosler. Something about the occupation his mother worked, I've heard.............

You can't imagine what a mess that has made for those of us trying to do our genealogy tho!

favor rather than silver and gold".

Eccles.7:1, "A good name is better than precious ointment; the day of death
than the day of one's birth".

My late parents gave me a good name. I have never desired to change it. When
I was baptized, another name was added. When I married another name was added.
I still have a good name and have no desire to change it.

You can also file something called Unequivocal Intent to Reside or something fancy like that, and get in-state tuition almost immediately. They don't advertise it. I knew a former law student who did it to get in to cheap grad school in TX.
