Foods: Good Vs. Bad

Okay...I've been doing a little experimenting with my foods...and I've been listing the foods in my diet that make me "feel" good, that is AFTER eating them, not necessarily because they taste good or bad, and those that drain my energy or make me feel bad. I'm going to post an ongoing list, and if any of you want to post the foods that give you energy or make you feel better in general, feel free. I'm trying not to just list what I like to taste versus what I don't like to taste, but rather foods that make me *feel* healthier versus those that don't, or have the reverse effect.

The Good Stuff

Feta Cheese
Apples
Olive oil
Whole grain crackers
sliced chicken breast
Water
Yogurt
Honey
Oatmeal
Rice (Brown or white, brown gives me less indigestion)
Sushi rolls
Edamame beans
Dried Cranberries
Green Olives
Lean Pork
Multivitamin
Buttermilk (Actually, I detest buttermilk...but I have discovered that I can "take" a Tablespoon of it when I have an upset tummy, and it seems to help.)

The Bad Stuff

Sugar
Coffee (Oh, that is so hard for me to write...)
Potato chips
Fat-Free half and half (YUCK)
margarine, or any other kind of fake oil.
Chocolate
Fried Chicken
Pizza, especially Pepperoni
Soda, sweetened or diet
Sausage
Hot Dogs
Processed lunch meat
Iron supplements

Okay, I'll add more to the list after eating more food.

P.S. You don't need to agree with either of my lists...if you post, post the foods that YOU enjoy.

The bad foods give me symptoms like: Lowered energy, reflux, indigestion, bloating

P.S.S. I've also been cataloging these foods, wondering if I may have some food allergies I'm not really paying attention to.

Well, initially, I LOVE it. But it doesn't love me...I end up with reflux, moreso after eating milk chocolate than dark (higher fat content maybe?), but really either way. I'm not going to eliminate it, but obviously I need to save it for special occasions, and maybe a bite or two versus a whole candy bar.

Has anyone ever tried making Roux (for gumbo) with olive oil? Does it burn more easily? Does it have a terrible flavor? What would be a healthier way to make roux? I may give it a try just for fun...

I did try making Roux with whole wheat flour. It turned out fine, I couldn't tell the difference. Also works for gravy. (Whole wheat flour) I can tell the difference in gravy--it has a grainier texture--but it still tastes essentially the same.

As long as I stick to whole wheat, high fiber, higher fat, lower carb foods, I feel great. Eating sugars & starches makes me feel groggy/tired and weak.

I'm making an "apple" pie right now and can't wait to eat it! I'm using chayote squash instead of apples. I haven't made the crust yet; but the "apples" taste superb!

Also, using radishes instead of potatoes is pretty good. I add them to my stew in the crock pot. They don't taste exactly like potatoes and the texture is a little different; but they're a pretty good substitute.

Eating berries make me feel good. Eating eggs makes me feel good - they give me lots of energy and improve my mood. Eating various meats makes me feel very good... The protein keeps me comfortably full throughout the day, lowers my appetite, and keeps me from overeating.

Very dark chocolate is good! I try to eat chocolate that is 75% cocoa or higher. YUM! Espeically with a spoon full of peanut butter. It's a nice treat.

I avoid most "sugar free" treats. They just upset my stomach; although, I can eat a small piece (1/2 of a serving size) and feel fine.

Basically, as I said above; foods high in sugars and/or starches make me feel terrible.

I do have less ill effects from dark chocolate, but still need to just have a small amount.

I am noticing a trend emerging, similar to what you've posted...that is, fresh foods, lean protein, whole grains, cultured dairy products....these are the foods that agree with my system the most.

Here's an odd one for me...peanuts are disagreeable, but almonds or walnuts don't bother me.

Oh, sorry to hear that.

I hardly ever notice the effects of certain foods on my feeling or moods, etc. Probably not because there is no effect, but because I'm just not paying attention!

Oh, but I do notice that Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners make me really sleepy! Tryptophan, I guess.

A glut at lunchtime makes a sloth in the afternoon, eh?

It can't just be the turkey...we have ribs for Christmas dinner, and that makes me sleepy TOO....

Hmm... Could be b'cuz peanuts are not nuts, they're legumes...?

Re: chocolate; I only eat about 1-2 ounces at a time and that seems to satisfy me. Milk chocolate? Well, if I start to eat it, I won't stop... for a very long time! LOL I avoid it at all costs.
