The Author (John) wrote about it so that you could understand. I wouldn't worry too much about it because there are millions who do not understand that Jesus was God manifested in the flesh. I myself have a hard time understanding why people just don't get it.
As far as why John didn't come out and say that Jesus the word was made flesh is redundant. All you need to understand is that the Word (which was God) was MADE FLESH.
Do you believe that Christ (the man) as you put it is the saviour? If so, then how do you view
Isaiah 43:11 (I, even, I am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.) If you believe this from Isaiah, then the man Jesus could not have been the saviour unless He was God manifested in the flesh. I hope this helps a little bit.
