Last night, the young people had one last Valley Rally (youth fellowship) near Milwaukee and I ended up driving when we discovered that the church van wasn't ready for us to take it, and I didn't have time to get things done that it needed.
We went to church and then bowling afterwards. We left just before 1am (I tell ya, I'm not a spring chick anymore and that's LATE!) and started a 2 hr drive home.
Just after getting on the highway headed toward the interstate (LR was behind me in her vehicle, as there were too many kids for just my van), I allowed LR to pass me to be the lead vehicle. She can see deer better than I can, and when she passed, I turned to her and waved.
I turned to look ahead of me and there were two deer in the roadway. I'm going about 65 MPH and hit the brakes, fearing that LR would have to swerve in my lane. The deer went off the road and I let up on the brake. Just then, the little guy decided he wanted his M&M's or something and crossed in front of me again.
I hit the brakes just as I hit him. Since he was a little guy, there wasn't much of an impact....for me anyway. The deer and car parts went flying and I pulled over, making sure the kids were ok. They thought it was COOL!
LR and I walked back to find the deer and make sure he wasn't in the roadway. We found him in the median ditch right where I'd hit him. LR wanted to take him home but we were in church clothes and nothing to tie him down with on top of her vehicle.
I called 911 and they came so I could make a claim with my insurance. I have deer insurance that'll cover all but $500. I have pics that'll show perhaps about $1500 of damage. Might be more, I don't know. I'm just thankful he wasn't bigger or we might have been hurt as well as having a disabled vehicle 2 hours from home.
God is good.
