Blackout in Brazil

Brazil emerged early Wednesday from a widespread power outage that plunged its major cities and at least nine states into darkness for hours...

Power went out for more than two hours in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and several other major cities, affecting millions of people, after transmission problems knocked one of the world's biggest hydroelectric dams offline. Airport operations were hindered and subways ground to a haltts major cities ..

Re: Blackout in Brazil

Wow - hope all is fine now.

I'm sure Sherri is glad she made it out before that happened.

Re: Blackout in Brazil

THEY are saying this;

The outage occurred when the huge Itaipu dam straddling the two nations' border stopped producing 17,000 megawatts of power, Brazilian Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao said. He said outages hit nine of the 27 states in this country of more than 190 million people...

however the news is saying more than these numbers were affected....

It is probably all Sherri´s fault....ha....

Re: Blackout in Brazil

I knew I shouldn't have stuck my gum in that dam.

Seriously, I'm so glad I got out of there before that happened, especially since I spent time in both Rio (airport) and Sao Paulo (hotel). I would have freaked out if I woke up all alone and it was pitch black everywhere!

You would have thought that something that big would have made the national news here in the United States, wouldn' t you? I never heard this until you posted it here, Sis. Alvear. That makes me sad. It speaks of the arrogance of our nation.

It was mentioned on local news in Memphis - I immediately thought of the Alvear family.

Just a guess on my part, but they (Brazil) doesn't want to make it too public because of the Olympics choosing them as a host nation.

I did google it this morning and there was an article about it, so the news is out there, but just not being broadcast widely here.
