We will go 30 and then overpay just in case times got tight sometime down the road.
It's a good strategy if you are disciplined. Personally I did this with mine. Been in my house for 3.5 years, but have paid down the mortgage almost 6 yrs.
The problem is 99.5% of all Americans are not disciplined enough...every month there is a "just in case."

We're paying an extra couple hundred a month ourselves. As it stands it will take about 8 years off of the mortgage.
