Re: Do You Have Something in Common W/Snake Handle
Some have died in fact or gotten sick enough to need an antidote.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattlesnake
Rattlesnakes are born with fully functioning fangs capable of injecting venom and can regulate the amount of venom they inject when biting. Generally they deliver a full dose of venom to their prey, but may deliver less venom or none at all when biting defensively. A frightened or injured snake may not exercise such control. Young snakes, although incapable of delivering an amount of venom equivalent to their adult counterparts, are still potentially deadly. Any bite must be considered dangerous and professional medical care should immediately be sought

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarantula
Despite their often scary appearance and reputation, none of the true tarantulas are known to have a bite which is deadly to humans. In general the effects of the bites of all kinds of tarantulas are not well known. While the bites of many species are known to be no worse than a wasp sting, accounts of bites by some species are reported to be very painful. Because other proteins are included when a toxin is injected, some individuals may suffer severe symptoms due to an allergic reaction rather than to the venom. For both those reasons, and because any deep puncture wound can become infected, care should be taken not to provoke any tarantula into biting. Tarantulas are known to have highly individualistic responses. Some members of species generally regarded as aggressive can be rather easy to get along with, and sometimes a spider of a species generally regarded as docile can be provoked. Anecdotal reports indicate that it is especially important not to surprise a tarantula

Interesting, the previous verse says they shall cast out demons and speak in tongues, with all the liberals around here I suppose they think that was symbolic rather than literal too?
And lets not forget the rest of 18 healing the sick, that's just symbolic, talk about pick and choose !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mark 16:17-18
17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Re: Do You Have Something in Common W/Snake Handle
It is literal. But that is a far cry from intentionally picking up snakes as part of a religious ceremony. A biblical example was Paul being bitten accidently

Sorry but the verse says "they shall take up serpents."
Not everything will be ok if you are bitten accidentally.

I didn't deny it says "they shall take up serpents"...it does NOT say "they shall take up serpents accidentally"..
Again we have a biblical example. No where do we have a biblical example of churches meeting with a box of snakes and intentionally playing with them.
