Re: Micky Mangun Criticized 4 singing of Natl. Ant
This is all I'll say about it - - I think when singing with a band you almost need to follow them. I wonder if she just threw that in live or if they had practiced it that way.
Had she had an organist that could have followed her like in a church service, the free, free, free would have worked better.

She is, next to my wife, one of my all time favorite singers. Not just her ability, but her passion!
Maybe I am the minority here, but I liked the way she juiced it up a little. I think she was trying to make a point on the 'free' part. I liked it. But, I am not all that traditional......
Come on folks....get out to the rocking chairs and stop all the tearing things down. God really doesn't like that you know! I get so sick of reading it too!
that's nice of you to say about your wife..
and the rocking chair comment sounds like something Monkeyman would say HA
I think MOST posters on here were defending Mickey's rendition... and personally, I don't think anyone should comment on someone's singing if they can't sing themselves (course most that can't sing, don't know they can't )

I don't mind listening to the national anthem in different vocal styles. In fact, this year I heard Take Six sing the anthem in a jazz style as only they can do. It was awesome! I've heard it sung with different levels of vocal acrobatics, which I was fine with.
For some reason, I don't care to hear the national anthem done with gospel type liberties. This is one area where I believe in a separation of church and state!
This is nothing against Sis. Mangun. I think she is a great gospel singer who sings with "ointment"!

I wouldn't say it has stirred up controversy. Just one little, tiny person spewing forth the vomit that comprises his/her heart. What's down in the well comes up in the bucket.

I agree... many things can factor into throwing off your range. M.M. is a great singer... too bad people are so mean.
I sang the National Anthem at Indiana Republican State Convention back in the 90's... and it was extremely nerve wracking to me...
I was 9 months pregnant w/ my youngest child... and had the national guard marching in front of me and the 10K plus delegates.... and every stinkin' Indiana politician behind me...
I had a lot of people come up to me with compliments and MUCH admiration for singing it while that huge/prego... lol I will say being pregnant does effect breathing.

I have to say, of all the songs I might sing, singing the National Anthem would NOT be one of my picks. Add a formal band, outdoors and live? NO WAY!!!! I've heard some of the best singers really butcher that song--and MM wasn't one of them.
The "free, free, free" wasn't my favorite thing--I like sticking with more traditional versions--but it wasn't as ruinous as the youtube poster wanted everyone to think, or as some on here have stated.
In reference to singing in general: Simplicity is way underrated.
