Mile runs?

What's a good standard for a 1 mile run?

I finally broke down and decided to listen to my coach and start doing roadwork. I hate running and told him I had been looking on youtube and the internet for studies showing roadwork wasnt necessary for boxing. He said "Yeah, keep looking."

So Friday I did .75 miles in about 10 minutes. I just got back from the track today and put in 1 mile in 14:43. My goal is to be doing 30-45 minute runs 3x weeklly by the end of next week. Ive been using a heart monitor and trying to keep myself in the 140-160 range for the duration.

But I cant help but think that an almost 15 minute mile is s l o w....

Re: Mile runs?

Just read that the USMC minimum is 3 miles in 28 minutes.

So... looks like I need to wind it up a couple notches lol.

Re: Mile runs?

At my age (65) I can only relate to walking. Many times I prayer walk to stay alert. I have 2 roads I walk both are loops. The smaller is 1.3 miles. Since I am praying I'm not really trying to work up shorter times. I do this in about 35 min.

The other loop is two miles. I usually do it in 1 hr. and 10 minutes.

Re: Mile runs?

do a little sprint work and see if you can get your mile down to 12 minutes.

It's pretty much necessary for boxing. Not long slow tedious distance jogging but 30-45 minutes of body movement with heart rate in the 130-160 range, utilising interspersed intervals of various lateral motion, backwards motion, shadow boxing, other footwork drills, etc.

The purpose is to increase stamina, both system-wide aerobic capacity and efficiency, and especially leg muscle endurance which is critical for boxing.

The only boxers who dont do roadwork are either "bums" who gas out after 2 or 3 rounds or guys on all sorts of PEDs (who still gas out too soon anyway).

But definitely not talking about marathon or triathlon type training. That'll kill a guy. Literally.
