Cruz: 'Bold Colors,' Not 'Pale Pastels' Key to Winning in 2014

Cruz argued that the 2006, 2008, and 2012 election cycles were "disastrous for Republicans," because in "all three of those cycles Republicans followed the philosophy of keep your head down, don’t rock the boat, don’t stand for anything, don’t take any risks and we’ll just somehow magically win at the polls."

Cruz contrasted those election cycles with 2010, where "Republicans stood strong for principle, we stood against Obamacare, we stood with the American people and we won a tidal wave election."

York's column actually makes a great argument for Cruz's strategy, inadvertently. Without Cruz standing up to Obamacare on the floor of the Senate, without pushing for an effort to defund or at least delay the law, there would have been no resistance to Obamacare's launch. Instead, the GOP would have quietly funded it and hoped the public would one day arrive on its own at the right conclusions about the Affordable Care Act.

Here's another counterfactual, one I think is more convincing. Imagine that on the morning of Oct. 1, as the American people tried and failed to access the Obamacare exchanges--or, worse, having succeeded and seen the outrageous prices--there was no immediate memory of anyone having tried to stop it.

The final blow came shortly after 5 p.m., when Heritage Action for America, the powerful conservative group that drove Republicans to attack Obama’s health-care initiative, sent an e-mail urging lawmakers to vote no because the House bill “will do nothing to stop Obamacare’s massive new entitlements from taking root.”

Soon after, Boehner canceled the vote.

There is a difference. You aren't forced to purchase or drive a car, and the government and the IRS are not involved in that choice. Having the IRS involved is a huge red flag as they are still in hearings over illegally handing over sensitive information targeting certain groups of people. Couple that with having medical records, it's a disaster in the making. If that doesn't raise an eyebrow, I don't know what would.

Re: Boehner Stabs Cruz In The Back!!!

“Imagine when the IRS decides that they’re going to actually start releasing information about the groups that they don’t like -- what their medical decisions and what their medical records are. They’ve done it with tax records, now they’re going to have the ability to do it with medical records and personal information.” Rep. Raul Labrador (R-Idaho)

“When you look at this scandal (IRS), it really gets to the deeper question of trust in government, but if you look at the IRS’s link to Obamacare – people are making this link now – because whether you’re conservative or not, whatever group they’re going after, people know that they could be the next group that’s targeted. And so when you realize that the IRS is the responsible agency in charge of enforcing Obamacare – if they’ve proven that they can’t be trusted to approve in a fair way a tax-exempt form for an organization, how can they be trusted to handle people’s private medical records?” - Rep. Stephen Scalise (R-La)
