I'm sure I've fallen short at times in this discussion. But I also remind you that you are a believer, a believer putting unnecessary demands on God's people, and even questioning the eternal fate of those you disagree with. My tone certainly may be harsh with you. Like Paul, I screw up and come off harsher than I am sometimes (at least I didn't tell you to go mutilate yourself - ahem Galatians).

My comments were in DIRECT response to the single post I replied to. Go re-read it with that in mind. It certainly wasn't a blanket generalization. But if the shoe fits

Who says that's immodest? You????? What do you base that modesty on?

What does "modest" mean? You sure you want to go down this road?

Actually, that's not what the verse says -- and I think you know where this brother was going.

In the context of "Not with gold" what does he tell the women to wear instead (since you see this as clothing/fashion advice)? Don't try to squirm out of this one and move on to something else

If we follow the same HG, whats modest should be across the board. Whatever happened to good old fashioned conviction? Ladies should know how far they can go before their dress becomes too tempting for every man's eyes.

The verse does say modest apparel

1 Timothy 2:9
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

1 Timothy 2:9 (New Living Translation)

9 And I want women to be modest in their appearance.[a] They should wear decent and appropriate clothing and not draw attention to themselves by the way they fix their hair or by wearing gold or pearls or expensive clothes.

1 Timothy 2:9 (English Standard Version)
9likewise also(A) that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire,

1 Timothy 2:9 (Contemporary English Version)
9I would like for women to wear modest and sensible clothes. They should not have fancy hairdos, or wear expensive clothes, or put on jewelry made of gold or pearls.

1 Timothy 2:9 (Young's Literal Translation)

9in like manner also the women, in becoming apparel, with modesty and sobriety to adorn themselves, not in braided hair, or gold, or pearls, or garments of great price,

Its pretty standard across all translations

You can't even get two red-faced cons in the same room agreeing on all the details of "what's modest."

How do you define "modesty?" What is it? Biblically what is it?

Who says the elbows are immodest? In the Victorian times, did a secular culture (influenced no doubt by the Puritans) define modesty? Didn't modesty mean something different in the 1800's, 1500's, 1st Century? It was immodest in some places for women to wear their hair down. Hair up. It was immodest for a woman to have a conversation with a man. It was immodest in some cultures for a man not to wear a wig in public meeting places. So what shapes our understanding of modesty?

not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.

onefaith do you know what that word "modest" means here?

So if you believe the text is self-defining the word as "decent, appropriate, not drawing attention" -- what does this mean to you? Does a denim skirt in a swimming hole seem appropriate? Does it draw attention? Fancy hairdos? Pioneer/LSD-Fundamentalist styles?

I understand Timothy is speaking to a specific issue here when giving these instruction for how the people show be at worship.

I also want to point this to the greater meaning behind the word "modest." Nowhere do we get a doctrine to wear short sleeve shirts, avoid shorts and not wear tank tops (ahem, rdp).
