Just came in from work...mom said my uncle's wife called with a praise report.
Someone who works for my uncle was able to get in there and said that the houses all around his (my uncle's) were destroyed, but his was left standing!!
They can't get inside yet to see about smoke damage, but the house is intact.

I saw that number at lunch. It said 1200+ homes and businesses had been destroyed.
Are you out of harms way for the moment?
For the moment...the fire is not heading this way....thank God for the winds. However, Santa Ana winds are unpredictable....at BEST. So, if the winds were to change, and direction of the fire change, we are ready to leave. We are on the far edge of the voluntary evacuation area. If we get a reverse 911 call stating we are under mandatory evacuation...which means the fire is heading your way....we would leave immediately.
First, as I am just typing this....it looks like President Bush will be coming here Thursday.
NOW...the news about me....it looks as if, right now, the fire is going in an EASTern direction, which is back in the path it started from. The onshore winds have started, the Santa Ana winds are weakening and is pushing it back. This could easily snuff the fire out. As of right now, no immediate danger....still in a precautionary voluntary evacuation mode....but it looks better here. Pray that it continues to improve and all danger is totally diverted!

On the news they reported that Bush does not want to come to early to things like this so that he is not accused of interfering or grandstanding (like the Iraq war), but if he is too late the Democrats will tear him to shreds.
Criticism can be good and constructive but the sad thing is criticism has become nothing more than a hate weapon.
I can only hope the firemen do not come under criticism. They are overwhealmed but still doing a great job considering the dangers. Yesterday there were no air support on the Arrowhead fires because of the weather and altitude. I hope people realize this...
One thing I have always wanted to say....California is prepared! I hate to say this but I think it is true. New Orleans was NOT prepared. We are prepared for floods too.
I am always amazed during these fires at the work of our fire personale...firemen, hotshots, CDF and others as well as the CHP, Police, Sheriff, city civic leaders, Governer and the support people that coordinate everything behind the scenes. I have a friend whose husband is a firechief and works in that area. With this many fires and the resources we have it is very important to have that kind of coordination....
The firedrops you see in Malibu are the same crews that fly to San Diego or the same department and location often. They will fly a few down south to whereever they can pick up water and refuel at a local airport

I have not heard one person criticize the firefighters here or the actions. For 2 days, we have not been able to get planes in the air...not a political stand-off but because of the weather. You put them up there and they go down...you have more fires to deal with.
As for Bush coming in later....I don't have a problem with it. There are a ton of personnel that needs to take place to prepare for his visit...which takes away from the matter at hand.
