Unfortunately, yes. And being Affiliated really messed things up when my father retired.

haha exxxxactly! There was some technicality and my father couldn't appoint the one he wanted (if he passed a vote from the church body). Instead the district stepped in and sent other ministers through to "try out" for the church; then held a church business meeting to vote in the new pastor.

At the business meeting, the district representative messed up and didn't read the manual right. He got confused between the protocol for when a minister retires versus when he simply resigns . . . and made my parents leave the building (and premises) before he allowed the business meeting to start.

I don't have fond memories of that night.

Oh, and then he changed the rules mid-meeting and instead of taking only the top 2 names as was first voted on . . . he stated that the number was too close between 2 and 3, so he was going to allow 3 names, not two as was voted on. And he didn't have a vote to approve the change.

Ugh! Glad that's over . . .

Being a licensed minister, if it was a labor union then ALL members would have a vote and not just those who are pastors/evangelists, etc.

In a labor union ... you have benefits ... medical, dental, life insurance, etc ... you also have union reps that will step up to the plate for you ... advocating for better conditions and pay.... most of all you get job stability .... and there are other little perks.

In the org ... you get a 10000 death benefit ... pay dues ... to HQ and the district ....and the job of collecting offerings for every division ....

Not sure they equate.

I've heard organizations called preacher's unions
and the UPC compared to the Teamsters among other unions.
