Crownover's Holiness PPT: Admits to Traditions

I found this powerpoint by Raymond Crownover, professor at UGST, to be enlightening to say the least:

http://crownteaching.com/powerpoint.aspx

Among his admissions about the UPCI's Holiness Article:

- the prohibitions on makeup, theatre and dances are carry overs from the 19th century Holiness movement.

- Dancing between a man and wife in private is not prohibited ... nor is mixed bathing between family members. Pants prohibited on a women not a practice in all churches.

- There is "No general stand taken about watching television" (Really?)

- Modern technology makes it unclear what constitutes a "television"-

- Some variation is expected to occur in non-Western nations as a result of cultural differences in the definition of modesty

Also, he argues that the standards of the UPCI holds are not just from direct NT scripture or biblical principles but from

- the laws of the Land
- Church traditions and culture
- Social Traditions and Cultural Patterns

A statement that stood out is that these standards ... "Should change over time as surrounding culture changes".

Your thoughts on the powerpoint ....

Unwhole music ... can be identified by VOLUME???

Quote:
Volume
Loud music is physically harmful and therefore violates Biblical principles
Damage from blasting Christian music or sermons is still damage
Cannot preach against smoking cigarettes if attending church causes physical harm due to excessive volume
Ray are you for real????

I don't know. I'll read through them later.

Re: Crownover's Holiness PPT: Admits to Traditions

Crownover is clearly challenging the tradition interpretaton of the Television clause in the Holiness Article:

Quote:
No general stand taken about watching television
Content not technology is the concern
Biblical principle of guarding our eyes and minds
Quote:
Complications due to technological change
Modern technology makes it unclear what constitutes a "television"
Most people lump all communication technology together as merely various modes of content delivery
A continuous spectrum from print to satellite and beyond with no emphasis on discreet elements
Again, the problem is content, not technology!

I tend to agree. While volume levels are still extremely subjective it is still better then teachings I've heard over the years where certain beats and chord progressions are considered "of the devil" -usually for no other reason then it is NOT "Southern gospel".

Ok, well I appoint me to be the one who decides if it's loud or not.

I don't think it's a very good point! First of all, ANY type of music can be turned up to blast out of the speakers. LOL! Secondly, what's too loud to one person is just fine to another.

Also, since you can die from the effects of smoking, and you can't die from listening to music that's really loud, you can't exactly draw a direct comparison.

Our kids went to a concert where "Skillet" was playing, and from what I understand (I didn't go), it was ear-shattering even in the nosebleed seats. Not my cup of tea, but the kids had fun. I would completely disagree that it's a sin to listen to loud music. (Or even that it violates biblical principles.)

Psalm 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Consider the meaning of "noise":

rûa‛

A primitive root; to mar (especially by breaking); figuratively to split the ears (with sound), that is, shout (for alarm or joy): - blow an alarm, cry (alarm, aloud, out), destroy, make a joyful noise, smart, shout (for joy), sound an alarm, triumph.

That sounds like a pretty loud noise to me.

I like loud music. But there's no denying the scientific fact that prolonged listening to music that is too loud is damaging to your hearing. That doesn't make it sinful, but it does make it unwise.

I agree, but I don't like seeing it parsed into a presentation on "holiness." It's unwise to eat Snickers bars on a regular basis, but who can resist a Nougatalicious?????? It's just another crazy thing to be legalistic about.
