One of the reasons I sometimes turn off K-Love. The local Portland station,
(104.1thefish) plays the same songs, so I recently emailed them and suggested more socially relevant music as in the past with such great artists as David and the Giants, (Dont' blame God) Barry McGuire, some Randy Stonehill, Keith Green and of course Larry Norman.
I got a response that said more or less that they are trying to cater to the tastes of their listening audience.
Today's music usually centers around I ,
and how You love me anyway, etc, al.

Re: Life Changing Contemporary Christian Music
America is - especially with social media - more narcissistic than ever.
There is nothing sweeter and more heart-rendering than being broken in worship

I agree with you that the classic rock of the 70's was far greater than todays pop contemporary music. I was addicted to Christian music THEN! I am addicted to it now. Why? Because it is the praise and worship of Jesus Christ My Savior!
Does that mean those of us who love to worship God do not pray? I suppose one should not tell their prayer secrets in reaction to something like this so I forebear.
Yet the strain of believers who are moved by and appreciate Misty Edwards hard hitting discipleship approach are sometimes known for many days of fasting and long hours of prayer on a daily basis.
Would to God there was something like this among the shallow, pitiful "Apostolic" movement.
So Brother Pilgrum would you share with me what kind of music YOU enjoy? Maybe you can point me in a more perfect direction? I have been following Christian music since 1974. It is my opinion that no one I have ever heard (as a musician) brings a more fuller mix of the whole word than Misty.
Its all there. The deep intimacy with Christ. Always teaching the first commandment. A lifestyle of prayer and fasting that is legendary among serious young Christians. The sermon on the mount being brought back into Christianity. The message of holiness and judgment!
So PLEASE show me something deeper than this in Christian music and I will publicly give you a great big THANKS!

On a side note however her church weirds me out for several reasons;
1. You should not ever, ever, ever call a church by the same name as a restaurant. IHOP is just wrong (yes I know it stands for International House of Prayer)
2. While it seems like they stand for many good things it appears to be rather cultish and a little google research finds testimonies of young people who have left that are disturbing. A lot of pressure to give all of your money to the church and a lot of questionable methods / activities that appear cultish.

I will address point 2.
IHOP is cutting edge on several issues. A return to the sermon on the mount. A drive toward intimacy with God as per deep emotional love. They are to my knowledge the only large Charismatic Church that openly teaches the post tribulation rapture.
Now as to the things one reads on the net. I have sat and read possibly hundreds of these posts speaking against IHOP. It almost always comes back to they resent long times of prayer and fasting. They feel that the forsake all lifestyle is works religon. There is really much ado about nothing as far as that goes.
As to money. I have been watching IHOP Prayer Room which operates 24/7 for 4-5 years now. There has never ONCE been a pull for money on the webstream. Matter of fact there HAS NEVER BEEN ANYTHING said or done in all that time EXCEPT WORSHIPPING JESUS AND PRAYING TO HIM in the Prayer Room.
Then on the weekend meetings webstream again I have watched it maybe 40% of the time in recent years and have never been told to pay or get out.
The copyright at IHOP is "the right to copy".
As to Misty Edwards at 19 years old she committed to Jesus that for the next 10 years she would not date anyone, she would not own her own house and that she would live modestly and be an extravagent giver. When the 10 years passed as far as I know she is still standing on this. For her life is all about Jesus Christ. I highly applaud such devotion having rarely ever seen it.
So there is much good to say about IHOP.
Nonetheless IHOP is a Protestant Evangelical Church. Trinitarianism is strongly rooted there. Once they get over that I would consider moving there.

I think one would really have to work pretty hard for that music to "do nothing" for them. The lyrics were clear and biblical and in this particular case the music did have melody.
I share your criticism that a lot of contemporary praise and worship music does not have melody. In fact my gripe is that typically they try to cram too many words (many times scripure) into a song and it has no melody. I just think you are totally off base here though as the music I heard did not fit that criticism for the most part.

I did not read anywhere nor did I state that IHOP was accused of seeking donations from outsiders. The criticism was that they charge high prices for programs at their school and strongly urge and use peer pressure to get members to give any and all monies available to them.

Im just saying what seemed to be the criticism from what I know. About all Churches try to get full committment from people. The difference is most Churches are giving nothing in return!

Back to Misty it says this on Wilkipedia.
Quote:
Misty Edwards is a Christian musician and worship leader. Since May 1999 she has been a worship leader and song writer at the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri where she serves as a staff member and intercessory missionary. Closely affiliated with Mike Bickle and other International House of Prayer Leadership, she can also be found teaching and leading classes at International House of Prayer University. Misty shares much of the International House of Prayer doctrines and theology.

I find the boldened part interesting. I wonder what it is she does NOT share?
Anyway Im really glad for anyone who was positively moved by Mistys session I posted. I cant relate much to the "Pentecostal" type worship. Neither the hymns. Neither the pop Contemporary stuff. Yea there are exceptions.
Misty is not just about music. The hard hitting devotion comes through with her.
So the original question starting with the earlier thread "Is contemporary Christian music wrong"?
What Misty has done IMO is totally awesome!

Re: Life Changing Contemporary Christian Music
I managed to listen to the entire clip that you posted MTD. (I had to let it load all night long... my internet is that bad)
I was very moved by her songs, especially loved the song about the Lion of Judah, and how Jesus came first as a lamb, but he will return as the Lion of Judah. She really does seem anointed, as far as what can be judged on a youtube video.
Also, it was awesome to see the heartfelt worship coming from the many young people gathered there. They weren't "juking and jiving" to the music, as I've seen at most OP youth gatherings. The worship seemed real, alive and spontaneous. Thanks for posting the video. It was a blessing to watch the unhindered moving of the Holy Spirit.
