The Change

I ran across this while reading in Job 14:14

14 If a man dies, shall he live again?All the days of my hard service I will wait,Till my change comes.

Is this not the same CHANGE, as in

1 Cor. 15:51 ?

Greek:

Job 14:14 ἐὰν γὰρ ἀποθάνῃ ἄνθρωπος, ζήσεται συντελέσας ἡμέρας τοῦ βίου αὐτοῦ· ὑπομενῶ, ἕως ἂν πάλιν γένωμαι.

The first part is "But if a man shall die, will he live again, having completed the days of his (natural) life?"

The bolded, second part is "I shall wait until I exist anew."

The thought follows vs 13:

O that thou wouldest hide me in the grave, that thou wouldest keep me secret, until thy wrath be past, that thou wouldest appoint me a set time, and remember me!

And is followed by vs 15:

Thou shalt call, and I will answer thee: thou wilt have a desire to the work of thine hands.

So, it does seem that Job is speaking prophetically of the resurrection.

The Hebrew says "all the days of my campaign I will endure, until my replacement." The word translated "change" is chaliphah (sp?) and is related to the Arabic kalipha (Caliph) which means successor or replacement. The idea in the Hebrew is of that which replaces another, as a change of raiment, or as of a "relief" in the military sense (as when a sentry "relieves" another), and in a wider sense of any kind of variation, alternation, or "change".

The Greek is much more specific and points directly to re-existence or a new life after spending time in the grave (Hades). When it says "shall a man live again" the word used for "live" is zoe, but when it speaks of "all the days of his life being completed" the word for life is "bios". So it provides a contrast between zoe life and bios life, one (bios) being "this" life, and the other (zoe) being possible after death and resting in the grave. It then ties this zoe life with "renewed existence" (ginomai) which seems very strongly to be speaking about resurrection (rather than mere continuation in an altered state).

Job 14:10-12

10But man dieth, and wasteth away: yea, man giveth up the ghost, and where is he?

11As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:

12So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

Job taught the truth. When men die they lie down as in sleep. They wait in that state until the heavens are no more.

Matt 24:29-31

29Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

After all Jesus made it clear the resurrection is at THE LAST DAY.

John 6:40

And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

So yes men lie down in the sleep of death until the resurrection at the last day.

The change spoken of by Joel is exactly what Paul meant in 1 Cor. 15:50-53

50Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. 51Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.

A perfect man (Job) teaches on soul sleep.
