The Monumental Lie

Great Read!
Make sure you have some time.
This is not a quick or easy read.

Think back. If you attended public school in the last few decades, you probably remember being taught that America was founded by a lively assortment of slave-holding Christians, deists and free-thinkers who insisted on instituting a “constitutional separation of church and state.” Thomas Jefferson, you were reminded, had famously affirmed this “wall of separation” in his 1802 letter to the Danbury Baptists.

"Slave-holding Christians" might or might not give you pause, but the reminder does give me pause, even if it is ever so slight.

WND?

Ok.

The madness surrounding the removal of memorials?

Were not talking about memorializing good people known for their good deeds!

Re: The Monumental Lie

This is just the first step.
Next will be removing any biblical quotes or inferences from any public place.

Next will be removing any books written by slave owners, white supremacists or confederates from all public libraries and universities.

Where do you stop? When you destroy history - good or bad - for the sake of preventing "offense", then it diminishes us all. Those who do not remember history are doomed to repeat it.

No matter how you may feel about the history surrounding them, any time a statue and/or memorial is destroyed, it destroys a little bit of our past and thus a little bit of ourselves.

Reminder of what? I'm sorry, when were you ever a slave? And how do you feel about the "slave-holding Muslims" that exist today? Does that bother you less or more than a history that passed long before you were born?

The Confederate soldiers were indeed doing a "good deed". They were fighting to maintain the sovereignty of their individual States. Again, they were not fighting to GAIN sovereignty, they were fighting to keep sovereignty that some possessed since before the Declaration of Independence was signed. If being slave holding States made them unworthy of keeping their sovereignty in 1861, then it made all 13 of the original colonies unworthy of independence in 1776 as well, by Jermyn's standard. Therefore, we must plod along in this struggle, in spite of shrieks of "racism!!" from those like Jermyn.

I still say that if the slaves in America had been some other ethnicity than African, neither Jermyn or any other Afro-American would be worried about this issue.

My point wasn't even to argue the merits of the history, just that we must remember all our history. Deleting parts of our history that we disagree with has never worked for the better, no matter how many times it's been tried.
