Have you accepted Jesus?

I was having a conversation with a new friend yesterday, and we were discussing the bible. She is an AOG pentecostal.

She wanted to know if I had accepted Jesus. I told her I had repented of my sins and received the Holy Ghost when I was Eleven thinking that would answer the question. She still wanted to know if I had accepted Jesus.

Are there people who think that you can be filled with the Holy Ghost, but not have "accepted Jesus?"

Yep watched my daughter get Baptized with the Holy Ghost and she was and is unsaved as in that she does not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Amanah do you go to a UPC or Oneness church???? Do you keep the standards of holiness as prescribed in many churches of that persuasion???

And yet, I also know of folks who have "accepted Jesus"
and still don't seem to have a personal relationship with Him.

How can someone receive the HG and NOT have a "personal relationship" with Jesus?

If someone can receive the HG and still NOT be saved, that also destroys the anti-baptism argument that Cornelius and his household were saved before being baptized

Apostolic is defined on AFF as:

  1. There is One God. This one God reveals Himself distinctly as Father, Son and Holy Ghost.
  2. The Son is God himself in a human form or "God manifested in the flesh" (1Tim 3:16)
  3. Every sinner must repent of their sins.
  4. That Jesus name baptism is the only biblical mode of water baptism.
  5. That the Holy Ghost is for today and is received by faith with the initial evidence of speaking in tongues.
  6. The saint will go on to strive to live a holy life, pleasing to God.

I thought this was funny. I would have explained it like you did. Would have found her answer puzzling. Had a AOG friend whos local church believes the infilling of the Spirit is always accompanied with tongues and essential to salvation. He said it caused some disagreement with other AOG churches. He has never tried to separate the infilling of the Spirit from accepting Christ.

Praxeas she was just going to church with me and the Holy Ghost fell. I was at the altar and I looked back at her and her hands were raised and she was weeping and she was loosing her English. Who knows maybe she was repenting for her sins and God chose that moment to Baptize her with the Holy Ghost. Unless it was an external experience.

In all your years have you not seen the Holy Ghost fall on someone that you knew was not saved and have them speak in tongues???

I see from another view maybe this destroys the Holy Ghost baptism with initial evidence for Salvation.

In my travels Im seeing more and more experiences like your daughters. Holy Spirit "falling" on people rather than ministers coaching them and "working them over" in the altar to be moved enough emotionally to receive the Spirit.

Re: Have you accepted Jesus?

The first step is only the beginning. Repentance comes then God can work. I have seen people filled with the Holy Ghost before they were baptized. But still others after. It is one thing to accept God but another to submit to his word.

Re: Have you accepted Jesus?

We don't accept Jesus--he accepts us! He doesn't need us--we need him!
How do we know he has accepted us?
I know it will hairlip some on here, but just like on the day of Pentecost, they spoke in other tongues as the Spirit gave the utterence!

Re: Have you accepted Jesus?

I would equate what she is saying with "repentance." "Accepting Jesus" (as I understand the term) is when you make a conscious choice to serve God and forsake sin. E.g., repentance.
