Necropolis at the Vatican

I am a happy camper today. Last summer I applied to the Vatican to be allowed to take one of the limited special tours they give of the acropolis (excavations underneath St. Peter's Basilica in Rome). I was rejected so not long ago applied again with different dates and was "authorized"!

The groups are limited to 12 people total and once you are escorted through a super modern palm activated plexiglass door you enter small narrow passageways winding your way below St. Peters.

You end up at the box that holds the bones that the RC church believes are those of St. Peter. St. Peter's Basilica was built directly over this tomb. In fact it is directly under the dome of St. Peter's.

I visited the Vatican as a teenager but had no idea that these excavations were underneath St. Peter's. Stumbled across that information on the internet last summer once our trip to Europe this summer was set.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."

Re: Necropolis at the Vatican

CC1, you are going to have to give us all the juicy details of what is in those catacombs.

I'm salivating at the thought that you have the chance to go there.

There is no biblical evidence that Peter ever went to Rome, but hey I guess they have to claim those are somebody's bones and it might as well be Peter since he was their "first Pope".

I have been aware of those catacombs for some years. Actually, the land under Rome and many other areas are riddled with them.

No telling how ancient the catacombs are and what secrets are buried in them.

That is true. I have heard that they still smell of death, even all of these years later. Having seen some pictures of what they looked like, I would not wish to be in one if my life depended on it. I have a problem with claustrophobia.

Jay, these excavations are not to be confused with the catacombs under Rome that early Christians used to escape persecution.

Several of those Catacombs are well documented and big tourist attractions. We will probably visit the Catacombs of St. Callixtus. It is a complex network of galleries stretching nearly 12 miles in 5 levels reaching a depth of about 65 feet underground. Almost a half million tombs of early Christians there!

I visited one of the catacombs as a teenager but don't remember which one it was.

Yup. It is the tomb of St. Peter (according to the RC church) and others.

Re: Necropolis at the Vatican

They probably won't allow visitors to the catacombs that have the real history tucked away within.

Still, your visit should be very interesting. Hope you can take pictures and give us all the details.
