The Bible tells us to rightly divide the word of truth as a workman that is not ashamed.
In your opinion how is the word of truth rightly divided ?

There they can find plenty of fault.
I'm sure there is much more to it then this, but I think it's partly keeping the scripture in context when you are reading, remembering who the audience is, knowing if it is metaphor, types and shadows, keeping other passages on the same subject in mind.

Very good.

Always pay attention to:
Who said it
What is said
When it was said
To whom is it said
Why is it said
Where is it said
How is it said
There are things recorded in the Bible that are quotes of something satan or an evil person said. We can't take those things as being direct commands of God to us.
There are commands, rituals, etc which were part of a different dispensation and do not apply to us in this New Covenant. These would be things like animal sacrifices, circumcision, tithing, sabbaths, etc.
Some things were said to a specific person in a specific situation which would only apply to that person. There may be ways something in that situation could apply to us today in 2011.
Remember, each scripture has a primary interpretation and may also have a practical application and may even have a prophetic implication.

I would have to agree with what Amanah and Sam both said.
But after seeking the Lord about it, that also is required when it comes to rightly dividing the truth. Meaning we can study all we want, but until we get the understanding of what we are studying, and the wisdom thereafter to know what to do with it from the Lord, all we have is the letter only that killeth. And when it comes to rightly dividing the word of truth, that requires the Holy Ghost giving us the other two so that we do end up having the truth to begin with.
And evidently this was true even before Jesus Christ came and died on the cross to give us this New Covenant. My saying that because of what it does say about this issue written in Proverbs chapter 2, as well as John chapter 10 and also chapter 16. Meaning without Him revealing truth to us, apparently what we will end up most of the time without this revealing, is a lot of manmade doctrines and beliefs instead, that will not bring us life, even though we do study.
God bless you Scott for bringing this question up too. As until you did, I did not even see fully what rightly dividing most likely does consist of. always thinking it meant to take all scriptures into consideration myself, then coming to a conclusion by my doing that. When my so called myself has just once again slipped down by the wayside once again.
Strange, but wonderful how that seems to always happen huh?

There are three ways to look at passages of scripture.
What does a passage mean in a historical context ?
What does a passage mean when grouped with other scriptures ?
What does The Holy Spirit speak to you personally when reading the scriptures ?

Also keeping in mind that there is a difference in a Hebraic And Hellenistic worldview could be helpful in reading the scriptures.
