Ron Paul Proposes $1T Spending Cut Plan

Oh... and it's not that "over the next ten years" like the rest of the pretenders put out there. This is in year ONE.

Article begins here....
Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Monday laid out an economic plan that would lower corporate and individual taxes and cut federal spending by $1 trillion during his first year in office, achieved partly by eliminating five cabinet-level departments.

Paul, a longtime Texas congressman, said he would close the departments of Education, Energy, Commerce, Interior and Housing and Urban Development, as part of a broader plan to cut federal spending. The federal work force would be cut by 10 percent. Mr. Paul also called for stopping foreign aid and "ending foreign wars.''

His "Plan to Restore America'' would end the estate tax and taxes on personal savings, "allowing families to build a nest egg.'' He would extend tax cuts on personal income, capital gains and dividends that were enacted under former President George W. Bush.

Mr. Paul has said he would support amending the Constitution to abolish the income tax, though that does not come up in his economic plan.

The corporate tax rate would fall under Mr. Paul's plan, to 15 percent from the current 35 percent, and corporations would be allowed to repatriate capital without paying additional U.S. taxes.

Some lawmakers have recently proposed a repatriation measure, saying it would free up capital to spur job growth. Critics of the idea argue that a tax holiday for companies with money abroad would not lead to domestic job creation.

The congressman also pledged to limit his presidential salary to $39,336, which his campaign says is "approximately equal to the median personal income of the American worker." The current salary for the president is $400,000 a year.

Re: Ron Paul Proposes $1T Spending Cut Plan

As radical as it may seem, I like his way of thinking...with one slight concern: his foreign policy is one I can give consideration to with the following questions:

1) We're spending how much per day on wars overseas?

2) How many troops have been lost in the last 10 years alone?

3) Iran and nuclear weapons. How would that be researched and resolved in our best interest?

As I said, I'm willing to consider his foreign policy (even though some say "What foreign policy? He doesn't have one!). But, for fear of possible repercussions from other countries for our occupancy in them, I hope there will be no backlash.

We need to stop spending, period, so we can build back our own economy.

Just my thoughts. I still haven't made my mind up on who's got my vote. I've actually put the whole political scene on the back burner the last few weeks. I'll just wait for the primaries and go from there...

Re: Ron Paul Proposes $1T Spending Cut Plan

If the mainstream media would actually give Ron Paul equal time as the other candidates, his ideas and policies could actually get somewhere with the american people.

However, Ron Paul cannot just let the New Hampshire and Iowa primaries steal votes from him and just "let it go and move on" like he did during the last presidential election. It causes doubts from the people in his leadership ability when he just "moves on".

If someone asked me to state one of my problems with Ron Paul it would be along the lines that you have stated. He is a wise person in many ways and he can speak and even confront without being distasteful and giving the mainstream media fodder to chunk at him.

But... there is a time to stand up and say Listen... this cannot go on. It is at those times that Ron Paul doesn't stand up to the plate and I wish he would. i like that he is nonconfrontive in his approach but there are, definitely, times to stand up and make a stand.

I so agree with you D4T.

This may very well be his last chance to run as he is getting up there in age.
