I asked Jesus Christ into my life on March 28, 1955. I was 17 years old and in the 11th grade. Later that summer I was baptized in a lake and joined the local Baptist Church.
Through reading the Bible and some other stuff and listening to some radio preachers, I came to the conclusion that there was more offered in the Christian experience than what I was hearing at that Baptist Church. They were good people, loved the Lord, and studied their Bibles but they were cessationists i.e. they believed all the gifts of the Spirit had ended around the end of the first century.
As I read and studied more about the Holy Spirit and His work I realized there was more available for me. As I read and listened to Pentecostal preaching and teaching I was also made aware of a "fringe" group among Pentecostals who baptized in Jesus' name rather than in the traditional Father, Son, and Holy Ghost formula that I had been baptized with. I wanted the Holy Ghost Baptism and more of the Spirit's power and influence in my life.
On October 27, 1955 I attended a UPC district function in Milwaukee, WI. I was at the altar "seeking" the Holy Ghost Baptism when a friend from high school whose family I had come with asked me if I wanted to be baptized in Jesus' name. I was not yet convinced that it was the scriptural thing to do but figured "why not? because I probably will be later on, anyway" so I went ahead and got baptized.
I was still struggling with whether getting baptized in Jesus' name was the right thing to do or not when a few weeks later in the high school library during study hall I read that article. It presented baptism in the early church as historically being done in Jesus' name. I felt like it was a confirmation for me that the older and more original form of baptism was in the name of Jesus.
For many years I wondered what magazine I had read that in and then a while back someone on this forum (or maybe some other forum) pointed me to that old article. I thought I had it filed somewhere (and probably do) but I couldn't find it the other day when I looked for it.
Thank you for bringing it to my attention. Hopefully I'll keep better track of its whereabouts better this time.
