Is America Headed Toward Socialism?
How much can capitalist societies expand? Is there a limit to economic growth? What happens when there is no more growth or expansion left? Governments can nationalize the banking system and issue debit cards to those who are unemployed and are on social security.
I think the capitalist societies of the world will continue to consolidate, have national ids and we will enter a new world order of hybrid capitalist and socialist systems until there is no more economic growth, then we will become completely socialistic. This is what I see happening. What do you see?

Man..... You are posting some of the very same concerns many conservative right leaning voters have had for years. Concerns that cause us to so strongly oppose Obama due to our believe that left leaning policies are the very cause of those concerns.
How in the wide world of cornflakes did you support him?

I like Obama because, unlike the republicans, I think he will be looking out for the poor and middle class. I think Obama was destined to win because McCain was talking about a "league of democracies" that would have undermined the current world economic system. I think the wealthy want a globally integrated economic system with America at the forefront. It is the wave of the future and any politician who opposes will lose in my opinion. I'm not for world government but I oppose republican efforts to tear down social security and universal healthcare. I think republicans are swimming against the tide.

Re: Is America Headed Toward Socialism?
You can't tear down Social Security. SS is just a numbers game played out on a computer somewhere. An illusion on paper. The scare tactic that it will go bankrupt is a joke. You can not bankrupt a financial institution that does not exist.
I will continue to pray against universal healthcare for a myraid of reasons that I won't bother with so as not to hijack the thread any more.

Re: Is America Headed Toward Socialism?
Well, well.
I find this thread to be extremely ironic.
When I started a thread in October DOCUMENTING Barack Obama's ties to a Socialist party in Chicago (http://www.apostolicfriendsforum.com/showthread.php?t=19295) , Dedicated Mind had some rather harsh words to say:

what is to fear from socialists? the soviet union collapsed, communism is dead, market economies are the only valid form of government. The only question is between totalitarian markets like China and free markets like the U.S. The solution is somewhere in the middle with a more regulated market. What is there to fear from socialism in the U.S. except more government funded healthcare which is already the norm in Europe?
You are engaging in unfounded scare tactics.

Now, with Obama about to take over as president, DM is wondering about the socialist direction America is headed in (??!!).
The irony, as they say, is rich.

I sure hope you realize that the U.S.A. is not a capitalist society . . .

It is only limited by population growth.

The reason that it seems that we have run out of potential for growth is that we had been growing on unsustainable debt models. We've been riding on a bubble, and it has popped. Once we get back to sound fiscal policy it can right itself and proceed to grow again. Sound fiscal policy doesn't produce the kinds of exciting, greed-inducing growth figures we've seen these past 20 years.

The conspiracy theories regarding the true motives for the creation of the Federal Reserve Bank don't seem quite so crazy NOW, do they?

Socialist economies can and do experience economic growth. It is horrifically stagnated due to the inefficiencies of central planning and the parasitic drag of bureaucracy.

I don't rightly know what to expect. The stock market shows us that the world is experiencing an unprecedented crisis of confidence. When the total of a company's issued stock is valued at less than the companies tangible assets, something is wrong. I have read articles recently explaining the perils of an Iranian nuclear EMP device hurling the U.S. back to the stone age. If they did it soon, most of us here would not survive to see spring. People are foaming at the mouth desperate for government to ride in on a white horse and save them. This is something new also. The stage is set for prophecy to be fulfilled. Or not.
Apocalyptic notions aside, I see Obama setting out much like Wilson and FDR did, with broad government gestures intended to revive the economy serving to actually delay the recovery, plus saddling our nation with a program that "unintentionally" grows into a hideous burden that future politicians cannot dare to suggest dismantling.
