Important New Book on Oneness Pentecostalism

This is a recent email and flyer I recieved concerning the publication of a new book about Oneness Pentecostalism, In Jesus Name: The History And Beliefs Of Oneness Pentecostals. It is written by Anglican scholar David Reed. It is not a counter-cult work or anything of that nature. Although I haven't read it yet, I expect it to be the most comprehensive work on the Oneness movement ever written.

Well, it has been a long time getting my book out. But it finally appeared this spring. You may already know about. Here is the flyer I used for my book launch. I just received a note that it has been nominated for an award that recognizes significant scholarly publications on pentecostalism. I think it has a good chance of being selected for the award, but it feels good to even be nominated.
I will be glad to receive your comments and reflections after you read it.
I am presently writing a book on the (chinese) True Jesus Church. Just spent 5 weeks in asia and am planning another trip next spring. Then I hope to write another book on variations and diversities within the Jesus Name tradition or on the edge of it.
I may be teaching a course on oneness at fuller seminary next summer, and can be available to give talks wherever. I do hope to write a shorter more popular version...that way more people will read it.

Thank you so much for posting this! Not only will THIS book be fascinating but the up coming book on the True Jesus Church should be fascinating as well!

It will prove very interesting for the world to become more and more aware of this element of Christianity, and hopefully scholars like Mr. Reed may be touched and enquire more perfectly into the way of God.

Like Thomas Fudge, Gregory Boyd and others who have written about the Oneness movement in the past, Dr. Reed was raised inside the Oneness movement, although unlike some he doesn't seem to have grown bitter or developed a hatred toward his heritage. He has written essays in the past that seemed to me to be a Sympathetic treatment of the Oneness movement (e.g. His article on the Oneness movement that is found in the Dictionary of Pentecostal/Charismatic movements). I think it will be more helpful to the Christianian world then either the Boyd or Beisner books in terms of helping them to understand Oneness pentecostalism.

His book may well be an interesting read, but if he has exchanged Oneness Pentecostal doctrine for Anglican doctrine, I feel bad for the guy, to put it mildly.

I thought Fudge's book was pretty straight forwarded without being overly opinionated - though it was pretty clear where he stood. Boyd's book is much more critical, but that's it's intent -- it's not so much a historical representation as a critique of oneness in general. I am a big fan of Boyd though.

I agree, folks shouldn't compare Fudge and Boyd. Boyd was making an attempt to get you to change or form an opinion. Fudge's book was/is academic and I can't i magine anyone doing any more comprehensive a work than he did.

What is interesteing to me is when Fudge wrote his book, everyone thought there was going to be this huge fallout. Too bad it did not cause a bigger spalsh in the organization.

How could a Oneness be a fan of Boyd? He is severely against the doctrine? I read his book it was wrong on almost everything.

He made some good points, it was just difficult to get through his obvious bend. I read portions of it until I had enough of the negative editorial.

We need someone to be the guinea pig and spend the bucks to buy this book and report on it so we will know whether to spend our thirty bucks on it or not.

"We did not wear uniforms. The lady workers dressed in the current fashions of the day, ...silks...satins...jewels or whatever they happened to possess. They were very smartly turned out, so that they made an impressive appearance on the streets where a large part of our work was conducted in the early years.

"It was not until long after, when former Holiness preachers had become part of us, that strict plainness of dress began to be taught.

"Although Entire Sanctification was preached at the beginning of the Movement, it was from a Wesleyan viewpoint, and had in it very little of the later Holiness Movement characteristics. Nothing was ever said about apparel, for everyone was so taken up with the Lord that mode of dress seemingly never occurred to any of us."
