After the 1st time, what are Tongues for?

I have heard folks say they have spoke in tongues once and only once and they appear to be fine, they "have the Holy Ghost" and thats that.

But, I am curious, it seems I can't hear a song with the name of Jesus being said or a sermon that talks about the goodness of God and there I go.

I have struggled at times in the past and have just burned in my soul to hear from God, and tongues start. I have gotten angry in my prayer (Yelling actually) and said "NO!!! I want to hear words I can understand!"

So what do tongues mean? Do they mean you are forgiven? Do they mean you have re-established communion with the Lord? What are tongues for after the initial time?

Isa 28:11-12
(11) For with stammering lips and another tongue will he speak to this people.
(12) To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

The gift of tongues is to edify you. It is the manifestation of the Spirit in you. It is used to edify the church as well.

If you want the understanding, pray to interpret, silly!

I believe you should just count yourself blessed and rejoice.

All these answers are good, but what made me think of this the other day was after a period of time of being so unbelivably busy, I found that I hadn't done much praying or anything else spiritual. I did find the time and I had to ask myself, what do these tongues mean? That God and I are cool?

Maybe that is how you and God communicate. Do you start out in a language you understand, or does it just flow with the unknown tongue?

How about despite your neglect of your relationship with God, He remains faithful, loves you, and is waiting for you. A lover may get cool with you if you ignore her because you're "too busy" but God is forever longsuffering and good and reminded you of it when you spent time with Him by giving you the utterance of tongues.

My suggestion is read I Cor. 14 real slow and you will see about 7 reasons why every believer should pray in tongues, at least privately so as to make sure edification is a priority.

Re: After the 1st time, what are Tongues for?

So now Carp is asking the questions?

Good question.

I guess private prayer in tongues is to assist in praying when you know not what to say. Keeping a mind on the Lord may also help to build faith rather than focus on the words.

Public speaking in tongues must be interpreted or they have a greater negative effect to the body than positive.
