Alabama Supreme Court rules Borat cannot be sued

By JAY REEVES, Associated Press Writer Sat Jan 19, 6:59 AM ET

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Borat to the Alabama Supreme Court: High fives!

The nine-member court sided with British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen on Friday in a lawsuit filed by etiquette teacher Kathie Martin, who unwittingly appeared in his hit movie "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan."

The justices overruled a lower court and said Martin can't sue Cohen and the companies that produced the movie in Alabama because she signed an agreement stating only courts in New York could hear any disputes that arose from her appearance.

What's the problem? The agreement was that any disputes would be handled in New York. Do you think that agreement should be void? Why?

I agree with AG on this one.

Makes one wonder why we don't have much respect for Lawyers (apologies to Newman & others), it doesn't matter if you are right or wrong but one can pull the wool over another
by just wording the release properly.

Shows that the recipient were willfully ignorant. One must READ the fine print.

Yep and due to this if I remember correctly about the laws isnt it that once the supreme court denys it she cannot take it elsewhere? So even though everyone else can probably still sue in NY she more than likely cannot which is even more messed up!

Ah, I am one that believes in "NO FINE PRINT!"

If you need it--something is amiss!!!

And it definitely was.

Do you believe that the lady in question is in some measure responsible?

I did not say that there was some responsibility, but the statement was made that there is "something amiss" in the US where litigation is the name of the game, and 'Right & Wrong & Ethics" are out of date.

Sad really.
