I'm still on the fence to be honest. Looking back over the past year, I will say it's gone about how I thought the first year would go. He's made his share of first year blunders both with appointments and with some of the decisions he's made.
The financial bailout of banks was a must when GWB and it was necessary when the Obama continued it. On September 15, 2008 $550 billion left the money markets in two hours. Our modern economic system would have been bankrupt by 5 p.m. that day and the world economy by 5 p.m. the next day.
From a crisis that severe, the Obama administration, rightly IMO, decided one tool was to pass the Stimulus plan early in 2009. The parts of it that were quick starters in communities across the country(school updates, ect...) I agree with. It boosted local economies and helped small businesses. I didn't support the infastructure portions that will be 2 or 3 years affecting the economy(roads, bridges).
On foreign policy, he made the exactly right and LONG overdue decision to withdraw troops from Iraq this upcoming Summer. I also agree with him that Guantanamo Bay is a blight on this nation's record and it's time to bring those incarcerated to justice. America doesn't deny people(even terrorists) a lawyer, trial and verdict. The Bush administration bungled it, the crimes weren't investigated throughly and now it's a debacle.
On the subject of Afghanistan, I appreciate BO's attempt to be thorough and not repeat the mistakes of his predecessor, but it's time for a decision. The President has to make sound decisions in a timely manner. That decision is beginnig to wear on to long. I think it's a mistake to allow it to play on much longer.
On healthcare, the jury is still out. Let's get a final bill and then I'll have an opinion. I don't have a major issue with a public option and have no issue with privately owned Co-ops. It's time that insurance companies are made to insure pre-existing conditions and not ration care. I think the Senate will pull out some of the more controversial parts( like abortion coverage) and I think we'll get a bill around the first of the year that will improve the broken healthcare system in this country.
l I will say that inaction is intolerable and that's exactly what Republican administrations and Congress's had brought for the past 30 years on the subject of healthcare. Nothing. They showed no leadership and are now in the process of being lead.
I'd say given the volatility and amount of trouble he's had on his plate this first year, he's done a passing job.
