I reread that entire thread and there wasn't a single post that even came close to "mockery" of the UPC or anyone else. The "camp meetings" weren't even necessarily UPC camp meetings.

These "complaints" are a constant refrain of people crying "Wolf!"

I don't deny that some rather objectionable things get said, including real outright mockery, but there is almost always a backlash against those who go too far.

The problem is that too many people with a UPC background have found it useful to cry "Wolf!" This often serves their own ends. I don't think Lady Rev. in this case had any ulterior motives - she just appears to have been a bit cranky. We all feel that way at times. It's usually no big deal and those who love us tend to ignore such crankiness and move on.
Good post. All this "Bashing" people talk about appears to be a way to belittle those who may have a solid point of view worth considering.

When people get cornered with the facts, they will scramble for an "Out" (Make them look bad). This is pure politics. To save face, make the challengers look guilty and out of line with their thoughts or ideas that seem ridiculous.

William Wilberforce faced fierce opposition when going toe to toe with the Brits on the slave trade issue. They (the political counsel and dignitaries) did all within their power to make him look bad as he wielded the sword of putting a stop to this barbaric treatment of human beings.

Whenever there is a shift in the making, whether it's in politics, religion, or culture, many will be offended by those who are brave enough to go against the flow of the way it's always been done.

Re: Negative thread after negative thread!

What is the definition of a "Negative thread"? Is it negative if it opposes a person's (or organization's) beliefs? Just for future reference.

You would have to have taken the time to read the first post. I shortened Lady Rev's post to highlight the finer point as to what she was getting at.

It has to do with "presentation", which has always been a problem on the forum boards. We don't take enough time nor care to make sure that we are discussing the issue and not defaming or bashing the people or organizations involved. It's against the forum rules. But, from past conversations/threads/posts on this issue, it appears, to many, to be such a fine line that we are not able to determine when we are discussing and when we are bashing.

Beliefs and practices have always been "discussed" but it used to be done RESPECTFULLY, as FRIENDS!

How hard is it to understand that when you MOCK and make fun of an organizations beliefs and practices, you are also MOCKING and making fun of those individuals within that organization?

It used to be that STANDARDS were the only thing that sometimes slipped from the "discussion" category into the "mockery" category. But not anymore.

Everything is fair game now. Everything from praise and worship to doctrinal/salvational issues.

The MOCKERY of things that individuals hold near and dear is NEVER acceptable. Whether we agree or not is NEVER an excuse to have a "free for all bash session" of a particular group or organization. You aren't just bashing the group, you are bashing INDIVIDUALS in that group!

How about some threads that are actually POSITIVE? Something that EDIFIES? Something that gives GLORY TO GOD?

I don't get to be on this forum very much these days. But when I am here, I don't care to read about how ignorant, stupid, ridiculous, outrageous, and "cultish" my beliefs and practices are!

I haven't been a member of AFF all that long, so I may not be qualified to respond. But it seems like to me that the Liberals and the Conservative have each had their moments of being a little (okay a lot) abrasive.

Each group has their own opinion and are quite ready to express it at the drop of a hat. And they each are quick to drop the hat themselves.

Now, what I seemed to have noticed also, is that when the Ultra-Cons (not all, but some) could not win the argument or have their way they just simply took their toys and went home! (Left the thread, announcing they were leaving in many cases. I've sure missed some of them!) Bro. Epley was as harsh as any that I remember, (Anyone that disagreed with him had reservations in Hell waiting for him, or so it seemed!) but, he was still well thought of it. And I'm sure there are some liberals that would probably fit into this category as well.

Now the way I look at it is if you've got "the truth" and believe it, it's worth standing up for. But don't get mad at me if I don't stand with you!

Oh well, I guess I'm just a dumb, idiotic liberal that ought to keep his stupid mouth shut! Do I get called on the carpet for calling myself these names?
