Apparently, White House, Black Market is a store that sells women's clothing in only black and white, which is a further affront to the fashion dogmas that have been held so sacred for so many years!
The general public is appalled by this revelation that she doesn't spend thousands of dollars on her clothing, and in a unified unprecedented show of disaproval, hundreds of thousands of women are flocking to the malls to purchase the SAME dresses she wears to the point that the stores are selling out! They want to get the peasant's garments off of the shelves so that no American citizen will have to be reminded of Michelle Obama's "down to earthness"!
This blatant disregard of pedagoguery and pageantry on the part of his wife very well could cost Obama his presidency before it even begins!
I was schocked and even shuttered as this startling information was finally revealed. Without a doubt, this will cast a shadow of illegitimacy on the Obama presidency along with all of the other wacko conspiracy theories that have been floated by wacko people for the last 6 months.

I am not appalled by this-- in fact, I see it as a very human thing to do.
She was her granddaughters' primary caregiver during the presidential election, and her presence is expected to bring some continuity to the children's lives during this period of transition. (The girls are 10 and 7.) The story I read (in the NYTimes) indicated she might not be there for all that long, because she likes being independent.
However, this wouldn't be the first time that in-laws have lived at the White House. Ulysses S. Grant's father-in-law lived there and was apparently a big pain in the neck. Harry S Truman's mother-in-law also lived there, and she would tell any and all that she knew dozens of smarter men than her son-in-law who could be president.
The scary thing for me is that this is the first president who is younger than me! Aaaargh! They're supposed to be older! older!

Whatever "costs" are incurred by the taxpayers will probably be more than made up for by the hassles she has to put up with and shield the kids from. It's family - as far as I'm concerned Obama can move in his frat house from Harvard to do yard work. That job's rough enough - and a few extra folks won't really change the budget line items one bit.
And it might be fun. The frat boys doing yard work. That might be fun. Have you seen the lawn?

This isn't meant to say whether his mother-in-law should or shouldn't move into the White House. That question reminded me of something I learned on the recent C-SPAN documentary on the White House.
Did you know that the President and his family have to pay for the food they eat in the White House? I guess I'd always assumed that the meals prepared for the First Family were at tax payer expense. Not so. Every piece of food they eat is paid for out of their own personal funds.
The chefs and staff that prepare it are provided as a service but not the actual food. Just something I learned that I didn't know.

I am sure they would prefer her over some strange person acting as a nanny. They know and trust her mother. There is no better person to do that job than someone who loves the girls. We have to remember that there are two young children living there and the parents won't have all the time that has been dedicated to them in the past. They need the mother in law there to take good care of the children. I am sure it won't cost very much more, and any additional cost is worth it to the Obamas and the general public. It is a worthy investment.

I think it is good to have the grandmother there. I wish more children had the opportunity to interact frequently with grandparents. And, if mom and dad have to be away, who better to have there than grandma? America might be in better shape if more grandparents had the opportunity to be actively involved in the daily lives of their grandchildren. JMO.
