Re: Holiness

Ultimately... I believe that holiness isn't a matter of "behavior"... it's a matter of "being". It's not about being of high moral character. It's not about what we do or don't do. It's about what we are. Are we vessels of Jesus Christ? I call this living incarnationally. Manifesting Christ in us. He is the vine... we are the branches. His life and fruit flows through us. We are one organism with Jesus.

Re: Holiness

Holiness could be defined as a life that lived as a result of being taught by grace.

Re: Holiness

Let us not act as if obedience has nothing to do with holiness.

14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: 15 But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation. 1 Peter 1:14-15

The connection is clear as it is everywhere in scripture.

Re: Holiness

Had a friend of mine at church said God convicted him about wearing a ball cap. Sounds silly doesn't it? I told him it was. He then told me how addicted to that hat he was and that he felt "less than" and anxious without it, he claimed his confidence was tied to having that thing on his head. That hat had become a "security blanket" for some reason I don't quite understand. He further explained that God dealt with him about his insecurities and where he was placing his confidence. He felt God was dealing with the heart of the matter in his life, his lack of self worth, helping him to be Christ-like. For my friend this was about being holy. Not his hat or the lack there of but what was going on in him, his motivation. Holiness, what I understand of it, is about motives and character. I am working with the thought that how we act, what we say and how we present ourselves before the world is about righteousness (self or God based righteousness) than "holiness". The influence of the HOLY spirit or holiness ought to be the motivating factor in our righteous acts.

All of these are great answers!

I especially like endtimer's answer being:

Perhaps this is something I need to work on a whole lot more. I never want to come across as "holier than thou" to another human being.

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

(Romans 12:2)

I want to be in the acceptable and perfect will of God. I am thinking that nobody can determine what this is except for God Himself?

There might be personal convictions for all of us as per Rom 14, 1 Cor 8, 1 Cor 10. However, some things are outlined specifically as the will of God we are to walk in such as:

1 Thess 4
1 Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.
2 For ye know what commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.
3 For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication:
4 That every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification and honour;
5 Not in the lust of concupiscence, even as the Gentiles which know not God:
6 That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because that the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also have forewarned you and testified.
7 For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.
8 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit.

John 6:40
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

You have brought the scripture that I had in my heart about people who claim to be Christians, yet devise ways to defraud their fellow man. Thanks!

We do/say/act/think what we are. If we are holy (partaking of and bearing the nature of God) it will show. However, it's also a process. Once someone's are washed away and Holy Spirit becomes one with a human's spirit they are holy. As time goes on and one cleanses themselves of filth in flesh and spirit the holy nature of the Spirit manifests more and more. That's my belief.
