The lady folk are about moments... feelings... and emotions and whether it be birthdays, thansgiving, christmas, or the annual vacation they busy themselves from occasion to occasion year in and year out attempting to capture moments... recreate feelings and moments of the past and create new ones that we can all work to reproduce annually for the rest of our lives.
Sorry to be so frank about it all but I've put a lot of thought into it and that's pretty much what it boils down to.
This is why your question is going to fall largely down these lines... Women... No. Men... Yes.

Interesting... I am female, but honestly I don't remember "moments" very much, my memories of holidays and special times pretty much boil down to fun vs. not-fun. lol We don't have very many traditions, or "must have" items... one Christmas my whole family had Taco Salad because we were all SICK of turkey and the traditionals by the time Christmas dinner came around. Some years we do gifts and some years we don't... it really just depends on what everyone's mood is that year.
So, yes, I enjoy the holidays because they're fun to me, but if I had to live up to a bunch of re-enactments and traditions.... I might spend the season on the beach.

You should invite your FIL. He might feel the same way.

LOL! He probably wishes they would all come here and they better not!
We will see him at Christmas. I always buy him some old westerns and I'm running out of available choices! He bought Brokeback Mountain having NO idea what it was about. We saw it on his shelf and asked him what he thought about it. He said, "Well, John Wayne would have shot those boys right off the bat."

Mom decided to serve navy beans and corn bread instead of traditional Thanksgiving one year. That's when we nixed her non-traditional ways as far as food goes. Navy beans are great, but they don't make for a pleasant afternoon of togetherness.

Yeah. John Wayne would NOT have been proud. That is a show I plan on never ever seeing.

Re: Hating the holidays?
I like Thanksgiving.
I don't care much for Christmas, other then Jesus is at least reconized to a small degree. It's not like it use to be....when I was in school it was still called "Christmas break", we sang Silent Night and actually had a "Christmas" play.

In my opinion, we get McD's ribs way too often in our culture. I think it is WONDERFUL that on the holidays people make the time to get in the kitchen and make some really awesome stuff with their very own hands! Who cares if it costs a lot, or takes a lot of time? It's a FEAST. It's fatted calf time.
Our lives are way too busy. We're always pinching pennies. I think it's good and healthy to every once in a while just pull out the stops and PARTY.
There will never be any McRibs at the family gatherings I host as long as I'm alive and kicking!
