Yeah we have stories like that as well but they didn't come from the genealogy research.

My great grandfather was put in the local jail one time when he was young. So he did what any red blooded southerner would have done. He caught the jail on fire and went home.

Come to find out... when my grandmother met my grandfather, unbeknownst to her, he had up and left his wife and 3 kids and never told her about it. His previous wife and her 3 kids were struggling to live just an hour or so away from where he and my grandmother lived. She (the previous wife) finally had to send one of the kids to some other family because she could not afford to feed them all. (Incidentally he is the one who contacted me)

He eventually left my grandmother as well (when the kids were small) and had 2 other wives and ensuing children that we know of.

But we found out many exciting things too. We tracked back to the original family that brought our name over the pond.

We actually found the original person who bore our surname because our surname came about somewhat by accident and a bad case of being eat up with pride.

It was interesting and because of it we have met more of our family and they are all wonderful people who we are better off for having met.
I really enjoy reading stories like the one above. Are you still in contact with your uncle?

Absolutely. On a regular basis.

He turned struggle into strength and he is a highly educated man with a wonderful spirit. He married a sweet lady who is as educated as he (she has worked to publish several high school textbooks) and they have several children who are all very successful as well.

It was fun learning about our history but making contact with a part of our family that we had previously known nothing about has truly been the most rewarding part of the process.

He actually did most of the research into the far reaching parts of our genealogy and he maintains a website with updated information on all living family members etc.

He began searching because, despite the way his father had done the family, he wanted his children to know their ancestry and where they came from.

I find it very interesting.

On my fathers maternal side, traced back to Westmeath County Ireland and the other one from England. Can't remember off hand which was which.

While doing the study discovered someone married a cowboy, possibly an outlaw that could ride and shoot very well. Only problem is he went to his grave with his real surname.

He named himself Lee.
Bump....I have the stories very interesting.

Let me know if you have an interest in a special section for reference materials etc.

John Walter Miller was married to Samantha Payne
we cannot link JWM to any other Millers leaving us with a notion that he might not be ligimate. It is possible he is a brother to Permila Wise Miller and we know her father and grandfather who immagrated to America from Germany in the early 1700s.

Samantha Payne Miller was the grand daughter of Jerimiah and Elizabeth Payne...they had no sons.....which can only mean that Samantha was illigitamate.....

I'm not sure. The ones I am directly kin to are from Liberty Texas.

I haven't researched that particular leg of the family very far so i don't know when they came to Texas and where they came from.

I am in contact with a lady who wanted the information I had and was going to trade me with the information she had (which went further back) but she has yet to come up with her promised part of the deal.

I'd enjoy having a special section for genealogical referance materials. I wonder how much business it would get? might be worth a try at least
