Family History/Lineage

Anyone ever trace thier family history?
How fare back can you go?
Did you find anything interesting?

On my dad's side, his mom & dad were married in Sharon, N.D in 1913 shortly after they both arrived from Norway.
From that union there are almost 500 descendants as my dad was 1 of 12.
We go back to the Vikings.

On my mom's side, her dad was from Scotland & in our direct lineage we descended from Robert the Bruce the only King of Scotland.

Your family?

My great grand dad came over from England and landed in Canada. He was a Baptist preacher. He build a church near Woodstock, which last I knew was still standing.

Later he came down as a missionary to the Indians in OK.

I still have his bible. Three volumes about 14x11.

Interesting!
He would have come over in the early 1900's?

It would have been before that although I'm not sure about the exact year. My grand dad was just a boy when they came down to OK.

Re: Family History/Lineage

I think that genealogy studies are so interesting!

I haven't officially done a study yet, I intend to at some point, but I have taken many notes from my grandparents.

The most interesting thing that I have come up with so far is that on both my fathers and my mothers side, the families go back at least 2 generations from my grandparents with births in America. I think that is not very common that no one within 4 generations from me is recorded as an immigrant.

The most disturbing thing is that my great-great grandfather on my fathers paternal side went to prison for murder.

Re: Family History/Lineage

My mother's family was French sailors, came over to Nova Scotia, then migrated down to Louisiana. I was able to trace them back to the 1500's. They came to Acadia, NS in 1640's. Migrated to Louisiana in the 1670's. My mothers mother's side of the family, I was able to trace back to 1715, when they settled in Virgina. Their family moved west to South Carolina, Georgia and Mississippi until they settled in Louisiana. I have not been able to find out much about my dad's family. They were not Catholic and did not keep very good records. I used Ancestor.com and our library has a very good genealogy department as resources.

Re: Family History/Lineage

My family was hillbillies! My great-great grandpa fought in the Cilvil War for the General Lee and the south! I have copies of his service records during the Civil War.

Family tales include him killing a general on a horse during the battle of Shiloh, TN. Of course, I come from a family of liars!
