Bro Steven
Pardon me if youve answered this question before. Once you left the amish community were you considered an outsider and shunned by your family? If so, do they now treat you better or are there still those that treat you as an outsider? If you feel the question is too personal forgive me for asking.

NO Problem.
I was part of the Old Order Mennonite Church - similar to, but not Amish.
One of the distinctives between the two is the OOM do not officially practice the "ban" or shunning of one who has left. So yes, in part, I am considered an outsider... but not to the extent that I am not invited to family functions. (I do know this is true for some who have left the OOM though)

I once had friends...the Ebersoles who at one time were OOM...they were missionaries to Brazil. They were killed in a carwreck. It was a sad day for Brazil. They were such good folks.

Steve,
one branch of my ancestral family (the Stuckey line) came to this country originally from Alsace-Lorainne, France back in the 1830's. They were "Amish-Mennonite". Many from that line are still very strict Mennonite people. They all live in or near Archbold, Ohio (Williams and Fulton County). I don't know many of them personally.
My question is - Is "Amish-Mennonite" the same as Old Order Mennonite, you think??? I'm curious.

Several splits actually do call themselves "Amish-Mennonite" or sometimes "Beachy Amish" and some of those are very "plain". But I am not aware that any of these would be the "Horse & Buggy" type.
Also, outsiders sometimes refer to some of the more liberal Amish as "Amish-Mennonite". (Generally the "Plain" Mennonites are not quite as conservative as the "Plain" Amish)
Jacob Ammon was a Mennonite bishop who withdrew with followers to form what is now known as the "Amish".
At any rate..... If we dig deep enough, you should perhaps be at my family reunion!!

What branch of your family are the Amish/Mennonite peoples?

Most of my immediate family is still Old Order (Horse and Buggy) Mennonite.
My first language was German (PA. Dutch) and the churches still sing and preach in German.

I am familiar with Mennonites. We have several where I live but they are not Old order. In fact, Ill give you a laugh. They were having a convention nearby and I saw a parking lot filled with nothing but black and navy blue cars .
I asked someone if they were having a black car convention LOL. I was dead serious until I saw some of the mennonites exiting there vehicles. They tend to like mini vans best.
