Re: Why Organizations?
Why organizations?
Well, I think Apostolics wanted some form of intellectual, set-aside sophistication. Those words might not exactly apply, but they wanted some form of governing body that upheld certain Apostolic essentials in doctrine and practice.
I'm independent. My church predominantly fellowships with independent Apostolic churches, although we do not discriminate against any organizations. A sister in our church is going to marry a UPC guy in April, and quite frequently an ALJC preacher comes and fills in or runs revivals for us.
I don't have anything against the denominational Apostolic Christians, but I don't know if I'd go that route personally.

Re: Why Organizations?
Nic - UPCI was formed in 1945. That's a little late for it to have anything to do with the war.
It was also formed as a merger between two organizations.
The PCI and PAJC.
So, whoever told you it had something to do with opting out of WW2 was not correct.

If I recall correct: it was not the UPCI, but a much earlier organization that was created brand new out of the AG, but because they couldn't get the exemption from the Gov't to opt out of the WW2, and also the benefits of preachers back then (free tickets for the train), they ended up merging with the PCI (actually, not sure if it was the PCI or the AAJC).
The name "General something something" comes to mind. It didn't last long before merging.

You are correct with your history. There had been several oneness orgs prior to this but this was the 2 final ones that merged to become the UPCI.
