I actually do think people try to overemphasize its spiritual significance at times. Parents do get really into it, and I think memorization alone won't gain you much. But, even hearing and reciting scripture is better than not doing it, so I think it has its place.

Honestly, for me, it helped me come out of my shell a bit, and I became comfortable speaking in front of hundreds of people at a very young age. It taught me how to keep things in long term memory, and it helped me have confidence and learn disciple. All of those things have served me well.

I can see that. Quizzing has helped my kids in various ways, but so has community theater. However I do think memorizing scripture is a good thing, period. That can be with or without a program, and is something we incorporate in homeschool.

Re: Bible Quizzing and the WPF

The verses that I learned as a quizzer helped me through the late teens and early 20's. I really credit quizzing with keeping me in relationship with God.
It also has helped me as a witnessing tool.
I don't have to look at a list of verses or have a printout in front of me to witness to people.
I also have two sons who are solidly in church and they credit much of this to quizzing.
Now, I would agree that quizzing and winning can become your "idol".
I have seen it happen and the results are not good.
I guess that's why we never won a national competition!
However, we did come in fourth several times at NABQT!

Somewhat before my kids time. Sounds like you might have quizzed with Fauberts (Canada). Jonathan McClintock was probably around then too. Went to church with him at New Life (Bridgeton) around that time and Lonnie Brown. Bro. Brown one of the most admirable men I have known.

Re: Bible Quizzing and the WPF

Getting back to original post, the WPF has a more open door in their quizzing program and a team of some of the best running it. I would expect most UPC pastors to remain faithful to the orgs program, but have heard that some churches do participate in WPF quizzing. Should be interesting how that plays out in time.

Certainly know Jonathan McClintock. We're close with that whole family.
