The state legislature would have to do this, and without the backing of the parish police jury as a whole, it isn't likely to happen.
A Town Talk poll showed folks around here 89 percent to 11 percent against renaming the bridge for GA Mangun.
I personally would be for it--he has done a lot for central Louisiana. I can, however, understand the problem of naming a bridge after a religious leader of one particular denomination.
No state legislator in this area is going to ramrod this with the constituency around here overwhelmingly against it.
My guess is, TF Tenney grandstanded with Jindal there and said something to the effect: "We need to name that new bridge after Brother Mangun!"
The governor has nothing to do with that other than try to use his influence. I'm sure that is far on Bobby Jindal's backburner: he's got problems enough here since he's trying to cut public education to the bone.
If GA Mangun is honored by something with his name on it, it's most likely going to have to be something on the camground and done by the UPC.
Now granted, the Police Jury voting down almost unanimously to endorse this does not mean the legislature can't take it up.
But with folks here so overwhelmingly against it, no single legislator is going to risk alienating a big segment of the population.
Yes, renaming the OK Allen Bridge for GA Mangun is not totally impossible.
But I wouldn't hold my breath until it happened.
Wow, some of the comments were not too complementary!! Leaders are always a target, aren't they?

I can assure you bishop Tenney didn't grandstand with the gov....actually he didn't even say that Bro.Cox did. He had spoken privately with the gov then asked if he could repeat what gov.Jindal had told him...then Bro Cox made the announcement.

I wasn't there. I don't know who said what. I only made the educated guess because the thread starter said TFT made the "announcement."
I am sure of one thing, however. If it was firm news that Governor Jindal was behind this all the way and was going to push it, it would have been front page news in the TT the next day.
That was why I was skeptical that there was a definite announcement where the Governor declared definitely that the OK Allen Bridge would be renamed for GAM.
Even if Jindal was for it, it's not his decision; it's the legislature's.
And Bobby Jindal is nothing if not a smart politician; he's not going to go out on a limb on something relatively minor as renaming a bridge in central Louisiana when the majority of the people here are against it. You don't spend political capital like that.
As I said, I wouldn't mind seeing it happen.
But my bottom line feeling is: it's a bit sad to see things haven't changed. Politicians still take advantage of UPC folks' naivete at Louisiana campmeeting.

Naming something after a religious leader of a single denomination can be dicey in any jurisdiction. That fact that it even came up is a huge honor and a great testament to Bro. Mangun's life.
Why doesn't the district buy a piece of land and turn it into a public park in Bro. Mangun's honor? There's probably a list of state and local projects just like that on the drawing board just waiting for funding to be freed up some how.
I can't see the district funding a major infrastructure like a bridge - but they could make an appeal across the UPC and Central Louisiana could be blessed with a new rec center, park or something like that.

Well, it isnt endorsed by the administration, but a long tradition of rebellious tweens and teens have made it, unofficially, so. See there is a coolie running through the property which divides the area in which the boys' dorms are from the area in which the majority of the girls' were (more dorms have since been built between the coolie and the tabernacle, which is also between the boys' and girls' dorms, so that nowadays, there are as many girls' dorms on the "boys' side the coolie" as on the "girls' side.")
So when a boy and girl who were dating parted ways for the evening, it was most often on or near the bridge and kissing, though prohibited, often occurred.
Since we are on the topic of traditions of the Tioga Campgrounds, how many of us still have a collection of name tags from past sweethearts? Sadly, the few I had left were lost in Katrina, but I had quite a collection after 10 yrs of Youth Camps.

Tim, thanks for the update. I can understand the concern about naming public places after religious people, which makes me wonder why there are so many streets, buildings, etc named after MLK. Was he not a religious leader? I know he ended up somewhat in politics but wasn't his platform the church?
I was not there, and my thinking is Jindal probably thought it would be an easy thing to do, but as you said, I seriously doubt he will make an issue of it with the politics being what they are these days.
