Re: Any other farmers/homesteaders out there

T2W,

When I am thinking/dreaming nostalgically I want to go back on a farm.

However, for the most part I am thinking of the overall atmosphere and not working on the farm - that is the part I definitely would not go back to.

I am not going to deny it is a LOT of work! If it were not for the fact that we plan for my husband to retire- read get down to one job- here we would be overwhelmed. Just getting the milking, bottling and clean up from 2 mini-Jersey cows and a goat before and after work every day is a big deal some days. But I truly love tending the garden and raising baby animals.... and we all spend our days doing something, right?

Thanks for sharing your reasons, I do understand.

Re: Any other farmers/homesteaders out there

This thread makes me think about the dream I have had for years of owning a farm. Maybe it is nostalgia, but I have always wanted the white farmhouse with the fron porch swing, a weeping willow in the front yard and cows in the back...maybe someday.

Of course I don't have the slightest idea of how to go about making that dream a reality!

We first got an unrestricted double lot and raised goats and kept horses and chickens... once we were pretty sure that things were thriving under our care we moved on to a 10 acre tract and began raising mini-Jersey and Dexter cows and expanded the laying flock and added meat chickens. We also did away with the meat goats. A couple of years in we got a chance to buy 22 additional acres and grabbed it.

No willow tree but we got the white frame farm house with the big porch complete with rockers and 4 big live oaks.

Lol...Oh, I was laughing (also) at the "Cow people are nicer than religious people," lol.
I'm surrounded by National forest up here; and you wouldn't believe what a little cultivation will do for a patch of wild something! I wrote an article, call it "Woodland Gardening."

We get 3-4 bushels of curlytenders (sorry, don't know what they officially are--the curled up sprouts in spring that would become leaves, from a certain tree) every year (no cultivation), for like, salads, or steamed, or just raw...we eat all we can, and pickle the rest. Stuff like that.

T2W, my son when he was in the 10th grade started raising chickens for an agricultural project. We raised chickens for about 3 years until my son went to college. The coop is now a storage area lol.

I would love to see your website. I love goat milk soap.

PMs sent to everyone who requested one... Let me know what you think... we are in the middle of a major overhaul of the website. I love it but my CIS degreed son says it is not user friendly... Have to let the expert have his way.
