Re: What if all we had was the Gospels?

Seriously, he came to fulfill the law. The law was given by Moses. Without that, what would have been his purpose of being here? To go and see a reed shaken by the wind? To go see an alien descended from the heavens from his heavenly spaceship?

Are you saying that, without the law, there would be nothing to be saved from?

Good question Jfrog, the Jew were looking for a king that would get them out from under the phyical rulership of other countries. Because of grossly missuderstanding the words of God.

Jesus came to make the way to relationship with God, in doing so establishing a spiritual kingdom. It seems without the apistles we would still have all we need to understand the kingdom of God and God's expectations of man. After all for the first 60+ years the only word the early church had was the books of OT.

Yes.

John 11:49-51 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all, (50) Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not. (51) And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Luke 24:46-49 And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: (47) And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (48) And ye are witnesses of these things. (49) And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

"Many Christians do not try to understand what was written in a verse in the Bible. Instead they approach the passage to prove what they already believe."

Re: What if all we had was the Gospels?

most people in areas were the bible is outlawed and people who are found to be christians are put to death, most of them if there lucky will get the gospel of john.

a evengelist who sneaked into china, said they dont have bibles, and what little they do have is broken up among there members to share and read. they really no hardly anything of the Old testament, and most of what they have learned have been through small leaflets and maybe some audio tracts.

and with that God has filled them with the Spirit, and the preacher stated they also start out there day with around 2 hours of prayer, and there services are around 12 hours.

one of the best testimonies i have heard came from a former muslim, who picked up a track with john 1:1 on it and through that verse he left islam. so God can work anywhere

Re: What if all we had was the Gospels?

CHRIST would probably enjoy it more because we would be more dependent on the HOLY SPIRIT for leading us in everything, and having to trust HIM to lead us into all truth, just as we were promised HE would. JESUS didn't tell HIS disciples to carry the Old Testament with them and teach from it. HE told them don't worry, I'll send you the HOLY SPIRIT and HE will lead you into all truth. So if someone tells you HIS provided way, to take it upon oneself to try to get the same results another way should be frowned upon(you would think). Even if there wasn't a "bood of Acts", the Acts themselves still would have taken place. Just as they still do today. What would be lost without the book of Acts(which is usually read over, or over looked when read anyways) is the apostles making it clear that even though they received a commission to preach the gospel, they didn't pick and choose where they went to preach and when they went their of their own accord, but always being led of the HOLY SPIRIT. When we read Acts we find them making statements like - "it seemed good to them to go to a certain place, and the HOLYGHOST had them go somewhere else instead" and in another place they say that it seemed good to them and to the HOLYGHOST to go to a certain place and so they went there. And hey the more time we spend walking in the spirit - the less likely we are to fulfill the lusts of the flesh.

OK, suppose the only surviving books that we today call the Bible were the four Gospels. Ask any Sunday School student to name all the books of the Bible, and you'll hear "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John". No Genesis, no Revelation, no Song of Solomon. No Acts of the Apostles! (Shudder! )

In this scenario, what would the Christian religion be like? What would the rules be? What would be the plan of salvation? Would there be a need for a plan of salvation? (Not saying there wouldn't be. Just sayin'.)

Would there be more unity?

Would we know all the things we humans do that God considers sin? Would that even matter?

Re: What if all we had was the Gospels?

And I disagree with you brother - It's not "The Acts of the Apostles", it is "The Acts of the HOLY SPIRIT". I believe it is important to understand the difference because they were all being directed and performing Acts according to the leading of the HOLY SPIRIT. Saul was walking on the road to Damascus, but what blinded him. A disciple went into Damascus to lay hands on Saul's eyes, but who told him to, and who made the scales fall from Saul's when he did? Who set Peter free & led him out of the prison? I could go on and on and on. They were partakers of the Acts, but the Acts were the HOLY SPIRITS.

The actual name of the book is "Acts of the Apostles".
