What if all we had was the Gospels?

(Oh no, not another one of Timmy's hypotheticals. Yep. Deal with it! )

OK, suppose the only surviving books that we today call the Bible were the four Gospels. Ask any Sunday School student to name all the books of the Bible, and you'll hear "Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John". No Genesis, no Revelation, no Song of Solomon. No Acts of the Apostles! (Shudder! )

In this scenario, what would the Christian religion be like? What would the rules be? What would be the plan of salvation? Would there be a need for a plan of salvation? (Not saying there wouldn't be. Just sayin'.)

Would there be more unity?

Would we know all the things we humans do that God considers sin? Would that even matter?

Would we know the correct way to baptize?

The Bible would certainly be easier to carry.

A bit of trivia did you know Luke was not one of the 12?

The same as he is today for the most part maybe not as uptight (phariseical)The primary teachings of Christianity are right in the gosples.

What would the rules be?
Im sure some would find someway to twist the teachings of Christ to preach against what ever they did not agree with, or thought sould be a sin. Look how resourseful some are today. For that matter the Pharise of Christ day had a pretty good monopoly on stretching scripture even then.

The plan of salvation would be much the same too. For the majority anyway. It is funny that some things are reveled to only one or two. And a new teaching develops from that which brings disunity into the rest of Christiandom. Kind of reminds me of a man by the name of Joseph Smith.

The only way we will have more unity is to put our own traditions behind us.

LOL I know I read this through before I started to reply to it like I did, but I missed the last line I guess. Sin What is sin. What does God consider sin? I have aways understood sin to be anything that comes between our relationship with God. That could be a candy bar for some. Some thing to think about, When Jesus died on the cross his blood covers our sin from the begining to end when we beleive in the work of the cross. so what would have been sin to many God does not see as sin because he looks at us through the blood of Christ who became sin for us.

The apostles didn't have any NT and they did OK. But than, they were with Jesus for 3 1/2 yrs too.

Re: What if all we had was the Gospels?

If all we had was the gospels would we even have the concept that Jesus died for our sins?
