Re: When ye fast...
I know someone who recently completed a 21 day fast in which for 21 days this person ate no chocolate.
Some people fast "meats and sweets" like Daniel did ( Dan 10:1-3).
St. Theresa (the Little Flower of Jesus) said that prayer moves God's hand but fasting moves His heart. Actually, fasting is just saying "no" to our human/carnal appetite, whether we are fasting candy, tv, caffeine, tobacco, computer use, food, or whatever.

Re: When ye fast...
Could exercising be a fast? The Lord knows how much I hate to exercise! I could turn on TBN while I'm working out!

Re: When ye fast...
As Sam said fasting when translated from the orignal language means "without food!" I don't agree you can fast from anthing else. As you are straving the flesh to enable the spirtual.
Abstaining from other things like technology is a sacrifice and God IMO honnors that!

That's just semantics. I think abstaining from anything for the sake of bringing your flesh into submission can be called a fast. Food is probably the hardest fast, because it's a basic human need--and probably the most effective.

You may be right, but when I fast from food, I find a closeness to God in worship, prayer, and in my thoughts that I don't find when I fast from other things.

I agree. Fasting from food, or the Daniel fast--those are the best, IMO!!!!!
I just think that it's okay to label other types of abstaining as fasts as well. (As long as it is something set aside or pushed away for a sacred purpose.)
If I were to tell someone I was fasting (which I wouldn't normally do, except for maybe my husband), I would clarify if it wasn't food, because usually "I'm fasting" means "I'm not eating."
