True, I got the Holy Ghost on knees over my bed at home.

I agree. The alter is where ever you make it. Many churches are so large now that it would be impossible to make an alter long enough for everyone to pray at.

I don't see a mention of an "altar" in the NT meetinghouses, but I doubt it's a bad thing to go up front to pray or whatever, I don't like the pressure to go up front, though... as if the ground closer to the preacher/pulpit is holier...

Our new church plans does `have a fairly sized altar. But, the coolest part is the coffee shop in the foyer.

Re: No alters in new churches, but larger stages!
The repentant altar in a church is a relatively new thing and a result of 'new' methods adopted by revivalists of the 19th century. There is no mandate in the Bible for an altar in a building just as there is no mandate for a building either. These are all cultural practices invented by the church over time, like so much of what we do in church.

Yes, I was reading an article, a while back, written by some Reformed people, and they mentioned the "altar" being a new invention, of modern evangelicalism.

Maybe it's because more people come to church to be entertained than come to pray.
