I agree. The alter is where ever you make it. Many churches are so large now that it would be impossible to make an alter long enough for everyone to pray at.

Or I'll say, "Where's the tabernacle, host, the bells, the incense and candles, so we have a proper alter?" I don't see a mention of an "altar" in the NT meetinghouses, but I doubt it's a bad thing to go up front to pray or whatever, I don't like the pressure to go up front, though... as if the ground closer to the preacher/pulpit is holier...

Our new church plans does `have a fairly sized altar. But, the coolest part is the coffee shop in the foyer.

The repentant altar in a church is a relatively new thing and a result of 'new' methods adopted by revivalists of the 19th century. There is no mandate in the Bible for an altar in a building just as there is no mandate for a building either. These are all cultural practices invented by the church over time, like so much of what we do in church.

Yes, I was reading an article, a while back, written by some Reformed people, and they mentioned the "altar" being a new invention, of modern evangelicalism.

Maybe it's because more people come to church to be entertained than come to pray.
