I wish them the best, he doing what needs to be done, given hope to his wife that she’ll be there and see this thing through.
It's important too what she thinks and how she feels about the whole deal. She may be wanting and encouragiing him to run.

True. But in this case it is in her bones which means that it will become agonizingly painful. A political battle for the White House and potential win are terribly stressful under the best of circumstances. In this case, we are talking about excruciating circumstances for the family all the way around.

I believe they will come to that conclusion before too long although they initially may have other hopes. They are also unlikely to get the same political funds and support they would have otherwise gotten. It will be a hill too steep to climb.

Seriously though I think it would be pretty impossible to engage in a presidential election with the kind of pressures and obligations that having a wife who is in her condition would bring. It probably won't happen.

John Edwards announced yesterday that his wife, Elizabeth, was facing a second battle with cancer but that they had made a joint decision to carry on with his campaign for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination.

In a televised press conference in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Mr Edwards rejected earlier claims that he would be forced to suspend his campaign even as he revealed the diagnosis of incurable but “treatable” bone cancer.

“Both of us are committed to the cause,” he said. “You can go cower in the corner and hide or you can be tough, go out there and stand up for what you believe in . . . We have no intentions of cowering in the corner.”

Mrs Edwards, 57, who had been in remission from breast cancer, said that this was “yet another hurdle”, but that both she and her husband had met “people in really desperate shape who don’t have the wonderful support I have and who have nowhere else to turn”.

Such suffering had made her realise why they should not give up on the White House. “It’s important that the American people have an opportunity to have a president like him,” she said.

WAS THIS THE RIGHT OR WRONG DECISION ....?? His wife has a one in ten chance of living ten years ... What say ye?
Why do we even care? And it isn't Edward's wife that has cancer (his name is not Edward), it's John Edwards' wife that has cancer (the last name is Edwards). The kind of cancer his wife has is easily treatable and the kind of chemotherapy she's going through isn't the kind that cause you to lose all your hair or cause most of those other side effects. Besides, she's been through this before: this is just a relapse.

The decision has been made and it was a joint decision. She is standing behind and with her husband despite the fact she is sick.

Edwards' backers are seemingly okay with their decision and don't feel it will be a detraction but may actually give him bit of an edge.

I see no reason why they (Edwards) should not run, many people deal with this issue daily, do we all quit our jobs so we can just stay home take care of sick spouse, most likely not, we live our dreams, kids go on to college, etc. Hopefully this would put more focus on breast cancer and more research will be done, so far Mrs Bush has not done a single thing for women’s health issues while in office, beside Mrs Edwards say she feel fine! If you really get down to it vice president Cheney should resign, after all he has a bad ticker a walking heartatact, blood clot in his leg from sitting to long on a plane, he could be a goner any moment. We are all dying, yet we don't sit around and do nothing.

I have to agree with you oh that.

I have a few co-workers who've gone through breast cancer. They worked when they were able and took sick leave when they couldn't. I had a different kind of cancer back in 1997: I had surgery on a Friday morning, was in the pulpit preaching that Sunday and was back to work that Monday. I've been cancer-free all these 10 years since then.
