Re: Pastors forced to perform same-sex marriages

One couple in his counseling practice could not marry because one would lose a pension by remarrying and also would lose a substantial health insurance situation.

Yeah, this sounds really "Christian"...

If the pension was her primary source of income and she needed the health insurance for a health condition she has... and would lose both if she remarried with a civil marriage... would that be more "Christian"?

Biblically speaking... marriage was always a private contract between a couple and their families. It was like this in the United States until states began requiring marriage licenses.

So it can be argued that this couple is marrying in a manner that is not only more biblical... but doesn't place one of the partners under significant financial and medical hardship.

Re: Pastors forced to perform same-sex marriages

My girlfriend and I have talked about marriage. Both of us are rather hesitant about it. Why? We've seen the current civil marriage and family court system and how expensive and downright unjust it can be. Both of us being rather serious libertarians feel that we can manage our relationship and finances better without the government being involved. We've considered this kind of marriage because it gets the government out of our business.

Anything that gets or keeps the government out is good with me.
However, I would imagine that common-law marriage laws would apply to this type of marriage as well!
I'll let you check and let me know!

Yes, if one's state still recognizes common law marriage, it would classify as a common law marriage.

My state no longer recognizes common law marriage. So, if we were to do this, we'd be government free.
