Until recently the only guns I owned were the long guns I inherited from my father and have given to my sons (they store them at my house).

My oldest son gave me a 357 magnum revolver for Christmas for home protection and now I have bought this rifle. Overall I think I have not been excessive in any way on what I have spent on guns in my lifetime. I am in my 50's and have spent $1099 over my entire life. I know people that spend that much in one year playing golf.

After I read this blog post, I suspected that you would enjoy it as part of the discussion you began on this thread.

There are many disturbing scenarios that we can put ourselves in, and wonder how we would react.

Right now, I know that we do possess guns in our home, and I know how to use them. Never have had to, thankfully.

If a wild animal were to attack myself, or my family, I would have no hesitation in pulling out my can of bear spray and then, if necessary, a gun.

After listening to much of this debate, I think for me anyway, having a few cans of bear spray around the house would be just as helpful as having a gun. At least it would knock them down... and give me time to escape.... you get the idea.

We have a friend though who worked as a teacher in a high security prison. He went through all the physical training necessary to perform this job. One of the things he learned though, was that hardened criminals regularly subject themselves to mace in order to be able to push through it if necessary. And, on the opposite end, the top guards in the unit are also put through maneuvers where they are subjected to mace on a regular basis themselves.

So he let me beware of the fact that bear spray may not always be effective with two-legged creatures.... and that a gun is always a safe backup.

I remember when I was going to buy a Springfield XD 45 for home protection. But as I was looking at it in the case, the Spirit spoke to me. God impressed upon me that, as with Israel, if I trusted in horses and chariots... my protection was on me. I realized at that moment that I could either trust Him with both my soul AND my life... or I could take my protection into my own hands. God doesn't share His throne or His glory.

Honestly, I go back and forth on the issue of guns. I truly believe that God is able to completely protect me in the case of a thief or a robber. And yet, my husband believes in self defense, and has guns ready in our home in case a thief, robber or rapist or murderer should try to enter.

If a wild animal was attacking me or my children, I would indeed respond with a deadly weapon if possible. Without hesitation at all. If a wild human were attacking myself or my family, should I do the same? What is the difference? The wild beast has no soul, a human does. But, they both have the same intention... to harm or kill me... so therefore in turn, I would do all possible to protect myself, and my family.

I like the idea of bear spray. It will stop most two or four legged creatures in their tracks... although not all (see my above post). I plan on investing in more bear spray and putting it in our home. At least I would be protecting my family, yet not left with the knowledge that I have taken someone else's life in the process, and then letting the judicial system deal with them.

Has anyone else considered bear spray as an alternative to a gun? Or at least as a backup?
