Are you telling me that the preacher cannot by scripture declare sound doctrine, reprove sin, correct false ways, and instruct in right living??

What are preachers for? What is the Word of God for??.

As to showing you the application of LOVE, it is simple. If you LOVE God, you will keep his commandments. If you LOVE your neighbor, you will treat him as you would be treated.

It's all about the transforming power of the Holy Spirit to cause the soul of a man to deny carnal-mindedness and serve spiritual-mindedness.

If you think conduct can be constrained, fine. Maybe, just maybe it can. But all the changed conduct in the world won't change the thoughts of that man who looks upon a woman with lust in his heart. So along comes a preacher with specific rules and applications, at best these kind of things only conceal the matter from those who look on the outward, nothing changes in the heart, the appetite, the desire.

I need the Spirit to lead me, teach me, and change me concerning all truth that bears witness within my inner man.

Others will put their trust in a man to lead them.

It's all about individuals making choices based in the desires that are at work within them.

Wouldn't it be great, if the primary purpose of those gifting ministeries that God has provided his church, actually approach their calling as a call to bear witness, to share the truth of the principles they have received from the Word, and then let each anointed member of God's body decide what they will follow.

If people follow a man, they are trusting a man.
If people follow the Spirit, they have put their trust in God.
TB,

From the very beginning of the bible, all the way to the end God set up boundaries. He separated darkness from light, day from night, and later through the Law defined sin, separating good from evil. All through the new Testament Jesus and the writers of the bible but boundaries (application) for living righteous. To come in here and say that we should only preach principles, and leave the rest up to God would mean that one is not preaching the whole council of God. Did Paul shy away from telling folks that adulterers would have their part in the lake of fire? What about Liars? I believe we MUST teach the whys, but there are sometimes that you just gotta call a spade a spade.

Maybe I am misunderstanding you, but what it seems I am reading in your posts is that preachers should no longer preach with clarity the Word of God, but preach only in parables, giving principles only. Is this what you mean, or am I reading something that is not there into your posts?

This is an entertaining thread. I think I will walk from my office to the Sunday School office and microwave some popcorn and grab some root beer.

I don't think the POA ever had a rule book that was handed out to the repentant sinner. I am SURE my dad never had one he handed out at any of the churches he ever pastored. In fact, in all of the churches I preached revivals in from 1976 through 1980 and from 1999 to present, I never recall a rule book being handed out.

I have seen the ignorant motor mouth who couldn't keep their filthy lips off of new converts or repentant backsliders but I have never seen a codified list of requirements.

I guess the short answer to the question is, "in my 32+ years of experience, none!"
Brother Phil,
I am speaking from the perspective of seeing men trying to rapidly change a person instead of preaching Jesus Christ and letting the Holy Ghost do the convicting.

I'm not going to be convicted of taking my toe nail polish off when people are sitting there starring at my feet in order to get the point across - which is a personal experience, as way of example.

There are going to be times, lined up with His Word, that order is going to be set out through anointed preaching. Some people don't have a clue and God, through his minister and through prayer, will give direction.

What I have a problem with and you've heard it a million times - "Don't skin the fish before you get it into the boat!"

I've seen this happen much to often, through the years, and it makes for a saint that hasn't set their feet on a solid rock from the outset. They just did it out of obedience of being new.

Now, there is nothing wrong with obedience, but at some point you are going to go through a season of questioning some things. If we allow God to do the work through our prayers and "sincere, anointed" preaching, we would have a lot more stable saints looking up and not around.

JMHO!

It's wonderful seeing the changes the Holy Ghost effects in the lives of men and women without law or rules by man being applied.

I remember my mom talking about how that when she got saved she just stopped doing some things that were not spiritually beneficial and some things that were simply outright sinful.

It wasn't due to rules or someone saying "thou shalt not". It was a result of the Holy Ghost, and those Spirit breathed convictions have never changed over the course of many many years.

I do think that there has been some waking up to the novel idea of allowing the Holy Ghost to have time to work in the lives of new believers in the church today. At least a greater sensitivity to it, although I know the problem of "cleaning the fish before it's caught" still exists.

Bro Hollis has been my pastor for 10 years. My family and I have been blessed by his ministry and wisdom.

Some of the things I've read on here are vicious and very judgemental. One of the things he teaches, the Bible tells us that by the measure we judge, we'll be judged. Matthew 7: 2 For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

If we judge harshly, we'll be judged harshly, if we show compassion, we'll be shown compassion...if we extend Grace, Grace will be extended.

2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

What happened to praying for those you agree or disagree with? Why would you not want to talk with him to hear him out...or at the very least, try to help him see your point of view?

SBG ... can you identify examples in the thread in which he was personally attacked viciously? If I remember this thread correctly, his viewpoints in the article were heavily scrutinized on both sides. Also choices to align w/ others in fellowship were discussed. BTW, for the most part, I agree w/ what he wrote.

Sometimes we fail to separate judging the viewpoints w/ judging the person. When one chooses to publish articles on the net or in print ... one should be prepared for the contents, and even, motivations to be analyzed. Your pastor, as is his right, chose to publish this article on his website and on the AWCF website.
