By the cross, believers are crucified unto the world. Not only did Jesus die, but when we put our faith in Jesus Christ and his atoning work, we died with Christ. We were in his death. That's something to think about!

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?

Why does God include us in his death?
Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

Our old man is crucified with Jesus. Let's think about that for a second. Our old man was crucified with Christ when he died. God's solution to our sinfulness was not to gradually change us. His solution was to crucify the old man. Thinking about it, that is a radical solution, but that's how God did it. Crucify the old man and start with a new creation.

"That henceforth we should not serve sin." Amen! The old man is crucified, so we no longer have to serve sin. Let's NEVER forget that this crucifixion of the old man happens ONLY at the cross. IOW, a good person by the world's standard is still UNDER the POWER of SIN. But we who have been crucified with Christ ARE NOT under the power of sin (henceforth, we should NOT SERVE SIN). For our old man died with Jesus.

We died with Jesus! (Rom 6:6) We resurrected with Jesus! (Col 3:1) These are true statements. We have to come to the realization of these facts to walk in victory above sin.

And based upon the living reality of the crucifixion of the old man, Paul says:

Eph 4
22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Col 3
9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds;
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

So for a believer, the old man HAS BEEN crucified. Now, walk as the new man which is renewed in the knowledge of God.

Sanctification is a finished work in the cross of Jesus Christ. Now, walk in it!!!

Note: I understand I might be stepping on some toes by saying "walk in victory above sin" but that's what the text said "henceforth, we should NOT SERVE SIN"
Wonderful thoughts!!! Oh, if we could only concentrate on the work of the cross in our lives each day, and not bicker about all the other inconsequential things!

I believe this is the heart of serving God, the finished work of the cross.
