Salvation comes with sacrifice for the believer (this is what discipleship is all about). Salvation does not come THROUGH your own personal sacrifice. It comes through the sacrifice of Jesus. His sacrifice was perfect. You can't add to that.
I realize that every question hasn't been answered and there are some stones left unturned. However, I think we should allow the man to retreat graciously, if at all possible. I don't want to see anyone or their reputation destroyed--do you? An apology and a removal of the offending information is adequate, in my opinion.
You say it deserves more than a "Oops, I didn't know that" retraction, so what would comprise "more?"

I do thank all the players here for helping me survive work this afternoon. A good portion of my day was taken up by a very long conference call centering around what to name an upgrade.
yea. what to name the stupid thing. I almost suggested my dead cats name...
and speaking of names, how dumb is Southern Eastern? That had to be a joke when they came up with it!
