Who Did Jacob Wrestle ?
And Jacob was left alone;and a man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.GEN.32:24 RSV
So Jacob called the name of the place Peni'el saying for I have seen God face to face and my life is preserved.GEN.32:30 RSV
In Genesis 32 we find the account where Jacob wrestled what appeared as a man,and Jacob would not let go till he was blessed, and he went away limping, and Jacob's name was changed to Israel.
In Hosea it says Jacob strove with the angel and prevailed yet Jacob said he saw God.
Did Jacob wrestle with an angel,or did He wrestle with God in a preincarnate appearance ?

Re: Who Did Jacob Wrestle ?
The Angel of YHWH was YHWH himself in his visible form.

Genesis 48:15-16 and Hosea 12:4-5, in my opinion, indicate that the person seen in the Old Testament as the Angel/Messenger of YHWH was YHWH Himself in the "form" by which He was seen before His incarnation in human flesh as the Son.

Re: Who Did Jacob Wrestle ?
Why is it that most preachers say Jacob wrestled with an angel ?

The Angel of YHWH was God in a pre-incarnate form.
When he wrestled this mysterious being, the Angel asked his name and then changed it from Jacob/supplanter to Israel/prince. When Jacob asked the Angel what His name was, He replied, "Why do you ask my name which is Wonderful?" Genesis 32:29
After He wrestled with Jacob, he said that he had seen
Jacob called Him "God" in Genesis 48:15 and "The Angel" in Genesis 48:16.
In Judges 13 this mysterious being appeared to the wife of Manoah. Verse 3 calls Him the Angel of YHWH. In verse 6 she tells her husband a man of God came to me and He looked like the Angel of YHWH. He is also called the Angel of YHWH in verses 9, 13, 18, and 20 and as He ascended to Heaven in the flames of the sacrifice they offered, Manoah realize the being they had been interacting with was YHWH their God.
In some versions of the Bible, Jesus is prophesied to be:
a child born,
a son given,
and He shall be called:
Wonderful,
Counselor,
the Mighty God,
the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace.
In other version Jesus is prophesied to be:
a child born,
a son given,
and He shall be called:
the Angel of Great Counsel,
the Mighty God,
the Everlasting Father,
the Prince of Peace

Gen 32:39 does not have the word, "Wonderful" in it, in the KJV... perhaps I should check the Hebrew (although, I am on my lunch break at work, I'll have to check it later...

I just checked in the NIV, Amplified, Jerusalem Bible, the OJB, the NETS, The Complete Apostles' Bible, Geneva Bible, NEB, and NASB and they do not have the word "wonderful" in them either. This is the way it reads in a Bible called The Apostolic Bible Polyglot: "And Jacob asked and said, Announce to me your name! And he said, Why is this you ask my name, which is wonderful? And he blessed him there."
I haven't had the Apostolic Bible Polyglot very long. I don't remember where I saw that word "wonderful" in Genesis 32:29 but I remember reading quite a few years ago. I think it was in an old commentary on Genesis.
